Best Local Athlete

Kerri Strug

READERS' AND STAFF PICK: This one was really no contest--how can you compete with someone who willfully injures herself for the glory of team and country? Oh sure, Charles Barkley is playing on those jellied knees, but he's getting millions of dollars for it. Eighteen-year-old Kerri Strug was essentially playing for free when she took a second run at the vault, and you can be damn sure she knew it was going to hurt. And if you weren't in tears when she collapsed in pain and weeping after raising her arms to complete the event, well, buddy you're inhuman scum and have no place in our great city. Now get out there and buy every Wheaties box with her picture on it and anything else she sees fit to endorse--she's earned it, man!
