Best Mountain-Bike Route For Greenhorns

Saguaro National Park East
The Cactus Forest Trail

STAFF PICK: Yes, there's a nominal fee to enter the park, but if you want a short, lovely ride not far from the center of town, you can't beat The Cactus Forest Mountain Bike Trail at Saguaro National Park East. This soft, dusty route, about two and a half miles each way, winds through some of the most beautiful scenery around these parts. There are a few switchbacks and a hairpin turn or two, but basically this is a gentle, banked stretch of single-track that could turn anyone into a fan of the sport. The route winds between a variety of desert plants and constantly reveals new vistas; it's so perfect it seems planned, like a Disney-view of the desert. Try it at sunset.
