Best Crumbling Radio Empire

KTUC 1400-AM

STAFF PICK: If you ever wondered what Howard Hughes would have said to the world during that last week and half--if given a 1000-watt radio station--wonder no more. For Tom "Aguirre: Wrath of God" Hassey, owner of Hassey Communications and general manager of KTUC, the end is so near he can smell it. In fact, the end is so near he can't help but talk about it. Incessantly. On air. All morning long ("Folks, today we're going to talk about going broke...."). KTUC used to be the AM talk-radio powerhouse in town just a short year ago--with a lineup that included local John C. Scott (now on KTKT 990-AM), advice guru Dr. Laura Schlesinger and master of the paranormal Art Bell (both now on KNST 790-AM). But the bittersweet fact of the matter is that even if KTUC's morning programming is circling the drain ("Hey, does anybody out there remember where the bowling alley used to be downtown?"), Hassey's Colonel Kurtz-like ramblings have got to be heard to be believed.
