Best Local Band--Blues/R&B

Sam Taylor

READERS' PICK: Sam Taylor's howled with every bluesman since Nero fired up his fiddle, and Tucson's R&B granddaddy-in-residence just keeps getting better. From his KXCI slot, The Blues According to Sam, to brew commercials and a recent rumored European tour, the man's been on a roll.

Rumor has it he steamed into town on the blues train bound for Hades, and figured summertime in Tucson was the next closest thing. Lucky us. After a brief stint organizing a local House of Blues at the Santa Rita Ballroom a year or so ago, Sam the Man has since returned to the club scene--anywhere where lowdown is the real skinny.

READERS' POLL RUNNER-UP: To quote the fine judges of that bygone Friday-night TV tradition, Dance Fever: "We love their costumes, they look like they're having fun...we give them a 90." Seriously, the sharp-dressed Blue Lizards have got the good humor, groovy moves (á la Morris Day and the Nights) and high-energy repertoire of rock/blues favorites to make any night out a dance party. Just ask any of the regulars who show up to their weekly gigs at Berky's Bar on Speedway. These guys are hot.
