BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP. Reader's Oasis. 3400 E. Speedway Blvd. 319-7887. Discussion of Jonathan Franzen's The Corrections about modern life, family dysfunction and the pain of being human. Jeff Yanc leads the discussion on Sunday, October 13 from 3 to 5 p.m.

CHANCE AND CONSTRAINT. UA Poetry Center. 1216 N. Cherry Ave. 626-3765. Brian Blanchfield, 2002 Poet-in-Residence at Purchase College, holds this workshop on Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m. on October 13 through November 17. For intermediate to advanced poets. Reconsider composition and the special functions of chance and constraint in poetry. Surveys a centruy of modern and postmodern writing. Cost is $150 plus material fees between $2 and $10.

COMIC CRIME FICTION. Reader's Oasis. 3400 E. Speedway Blvd. 319-7887. Pete Hautman reads from his new novel about an unlikely detective and co-owner of a clothing shop that mysteriously burns to the ground. Reading begins at 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 12. He reads on Friday, October 11 at 7 p.m. at Clues Unlimited (123 S. Eastbourne).

FALL READING SERIES. UA Modern Languages Auditorium. Gerald Stern reads new and early work in the Poetry Center series on Wednesday, October 16 at 8 p.m. Stern's most recent book is American Sonnets.

KARIN SLAUGHTER READS. Borders Books at Park Place. Broadway Blvd. Reading and discussion of her new work, Kisscut, takes place on Friday, October 11 at 7 p.m.

LETTER WRITING. Antigone Books. 411 N. Fourth Ave. 792-3715. Tucson author Lauren B. Smith talks about her book, Unsent Letters: Writing as a Way to Resolve and Renew, on Friday, October 11 at 7 p.m. and offers insight into the power of writing letters you don't intend to send.

MICHELLE TEA READS. Antigone Books. 411 N. Fourth Ave. 792-3715. The Chelsea Whistle is the San Francisco author's new book, a confessional, gritty memoir of her childhood in Chelsea, Massachusetts. The co-director of Sister Spit, an all-girl, queer, spoken word performance troupe, reads on Tuesday, October 15 at 5 p.m.
