ARIZONA HISTORICAL SOCIETY. 949 E. Second St. 628-5775. Mark Santiago, director of the New Mexico Museum of Space History, presents Esteemed in Importance: The Antebellum History of Fort Yuma, 1850-1861 July 18 from 7 to 9 p.m. Santiago discusses Fort Yuma's importance as a post securing the area against hostile Indian tribes, Mexican revolutionaries and American and French filibusters and more. Admission costs $6, $5 for Historical Society members and $3 for students with I.D. The entire lecture series costs $30 for members, $36 for nonmembers and $18 for students. LEARN TO GROW ORCHIDS. Tucson Botanical Gardens. 2150 N. Alvernon Way. 326-9686. Join horticulturist/ecologist Mark Dimmitt for an evening devoted to the cultivation of orchids. Dimmitt presents a slide show and live specimens, and discusses the orchid family and major groups of the flowers. Admission costs $22 for garden members and $28 for nonmembers. PANCAKE BREAKFAST. Salvation Army. 101 N. Richey Blvd. 795-4504. An all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast that includes one egg, two bacon strips or sausage links and beverages takes place July 14 from 8 to 10 a.m. Cost is $3 for adults and $1.75 for children 12 and younger. Proceeds benefit local youth programs.

RELIGION IN FILM. St. Philip's in the Hills Church. 4440 N. Campbell Ave. 299-6421. The series continues July 13 at 7 p.m. with a screeening of Heaven's Above. This 1963 black-and-white comedy tells the story of an Anglican priest who is tranferred by clerical error to a country parish where anything that can go wrong does. The movie stars Peter Sellers and is not rated. Admission and snacks are free. A discussion of the film and its message is conducted after the screening.

WINE TASTING CLASSES. Brew and Vine. 6435 N. Oracle Road at Orange Grove. 206-9463. This summer wine tasting series explores different wine styles, food and wine pairing, the hidden values in the world of wine and more. Each class begins with a sparkling-wine reception followed by a wine tasting and presentation with Zalman Berkowitz. The class is in session every Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. and costs $25 per person. NATIVE AMERICAN ART FESTIVAL. The White Mountain Native American Art Festival and Indian Market takes place July 21 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and July 22 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Blueridge High School in Pinetop-Lakeside, AZ. Enjoy art demonstrations, performances, children's activities and Native American foods. Admission is $6; children under 12 are free. Call for more information.

PIONEER DAY CELEBRATION. Come celebrate Pioneer Day in Snowflake, AZ, July 20-21 starting at 9 a.m. Shop for arts and crafts in historic downtown and enjoy a parade, BBQ, rodeo, dances, run, softball league tournament, swimming, fireworks and more. Call for more information.
