The Humane Society hosts a mini-golf tournament May 18 from 6 to 9 p.m. Festivities include golf-related contests such as the Palmer the Golf Club, Silver Spoon Golf Ball Race and the Not-a-Hole-One putting contest. Prizes are awarded. Registration is $7 and includes 18 holes of miniature golf, entry to all contests and a small soft drink. Registration forms are available at the Humane Society shelter at 3450 N. NEW KIVA PUPPET THEATRE. Red Barn Theatre. 948 N. Main Ave. 887-5144. The Little Red Hen and Other Stories runs every Sunday at 1:30 p.m. throughout the month of May. This amusing and sometimes scary show is educational and fun. In addition, kids of all ages get up close and personal action with the puppets after the show and the audience gets a chance to make a puppet to take home. Tickets are $3 per person, $5 for two children and $2 with AHCCS card or low income bus pass. Reservations are not required. SUMMER DAY CAMP. Salvation Army Amphi Corps & Youth Center. 218 E. A Summer Day Camp program for children ages 5-12 runs from May 23 through August 10 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Children have an opportunity to swim, skate, do arts and crafts projects, take field trips, play basketball, watch videos and more. BICAS offers the build-a-bike program for all. Take part in the eight-session course and fix up old bikes for the community. Classes are ongoing. Cost ranges from $15 to $60. Call 628-7950 for information. MUSICAL THEATER SUMMER CAMP. Arizona Onstage Productions is conducting a summer institute for students in grades 4 through 9 June 4-29, Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. All activities take place at Basis School on East Second Street. The course focuses on the basics of musical-theater technique including singing, movement, character development and set and costume design. This four-week program in basic botany and plant science for middle schoolers includes gardening, horticulture, and landscape design. Students get hands-on experience in gardens, greenhouses, and the classroom. There are also field trips and guest speakers. There is no fee for this course, which includes a stipend for students who attend June 4-29 and July 9-August 3 from 7:30 a.m. to noon. SOCCER CAMP. PCC Community Campus. 401 N. Bonita Ave. 982-9832. Children ages four and older can now register for the Aztec Soccer Camp 2001. Two sessions run from June 4-8 and July 9-13 and include a range of skill levels. Call for schedule and cost. SUMMER ARTS CAMP. Zuzi's Little Theater. 738 N. Fifth Ave. 629-0237. A summer arts program for children ages 7-13 is offered daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays from June 4-15. Learn aerial dance, creative movement, drumming, costuming, production and hands-on visual arts including mural and mask making. Cost of the ten-day program is $350 and includes snacks and supplies. For more information or to register call 481-3213. SUMMER FINE ARTS PROGRAM. Tucson Girls Chorus Music Center. 4020 E. River Road. The Tucson Girls Chorus' summer fine arts program begins June 4. This year's curriculum includes puppetry, chorus, Irish step dancing, natural paints, storytelling, musical theater and a class that creates an original opera. Storytime teaches children an appreciation for reading, and events are tailored to specific age groups including babies, toddlers, preschoolers, school-agers and family. Admission is free. Call 791-4391 for age-specific times. VOLLEYBALL/BASKETBALL CAMPS. The Mike Pensinger Boys & Girls Basketball Camp and the Julie King Volleyball Camp offer two one-week sessions for youth 10-17 beginning June 4. Cost is $100 per session. The programs are designed to provide an opportunity for players of all abilities to develop individual and team skills in a positive supportive environment. Alvernon Way. 326-9686, ext. 10. Spend the morning with the animals at Reid Park Zoo, picnic at the Botanical Gardens and spend the afternoon exploring exotic plant life at the Botanical Gardens. In addition, there are fun indoor crafts to keep kids cool. The five-day, all-day camp takes place from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. June 11-15 for first and second graders, June 25-29 for second and third graders and July 16-20 for fourth and fifth graders. Cost of the camp is $170 for garden members and $180 for non-members. |
