Learn how to control garden and landscape insect pests May 3 at 2 p.m. Dicover the secrets to landscaping that can keep a house cool. Both events are free and sponsosred by the Pima County Cooperative Extension Garden Center.

Regular admission to the gardens is $4, $3 for seniors, $1 for children 6 to 11 and free for members and children under age 5. Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily. HERB WORKSHOP. Tucson Botanical Gardens. 2150 N. Alvernon Way. 326-9686. Learn the many uses and benefits of lavender in this hands-on workshop taught by herbalist Joan Cotten-Parks May 5 from 10 a.m. to noon. Participants will make fragrant herbal items including, a lavender sleep pillow, lavender-linen sachets, bath herbs and more. Cost of the class is $16 for members and $18 for non-members.

LANDSCAPING AND HORTICULTURE. Tucson Botanical Gardens. 2150 N. Alvernon Way. 326-9686. This course emphasizes the selection of appropriate plants for desert landscaping. Horticulturist Solveig Palanek shows slides and discusses characteristics and horticultural requirements for highly recommended trees, shrubs and groundcovers. Cost of the May 17, 7 to 8:30 p.m. class is $4 for members and $6 for non-members.

NATIVE SEEDS/SEARCH. Native Seeds/SEARCH is a nonprofit group working to conserve the traditional crops, seeds and farming methods of the southwestern U.S. and Mexico. Call 622-5561 for information.
