The Tucson Classic's American Quarter Horse Show tests the ability of horses in dozens of classes and features events such as jumping, reining, barrel racing, cutting, roping and pole bending. In addition, halter classes that judge horses on balance, muscling and breed are held. Then event takes place May 5 and 6 at 9 a.m. and admission is free.
CABARET 2001. Berger Performing Arts Center. 1200 W. Speedway Blvd. 293-1225. Kids Unlimited presents Cabaret 2001, a variety showcase benefit that celebrates music and dance from the last 30 years. The benefit advances education in the performing arts for children and teens who have demonstrated both commitment and financial need. Tickets are $8 at the door.
CERAMICS/POTTERY SALE. The Ceramics Studio. UA campus, 1200 N. Mountain Ave. 623-3582. The Art/Clayworks Club and Graduate Ceramics Alliance host a pottery sale May 3-4 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. The sale features unique, hand-made pottery, sculptures and one-of-a-kind clay creations. There is also coffee and light refreshments available for purchase. Admission is free.

Celebrate Cinco de Mayo weekend with interactive activities and free crafts May 6 from 4 to 7 p.m. The Zoo's regular hours are extended and animals remain on exhibit until 6:30 p.m. Admission is $4 for adults and 75 cents for children 5-14. Cinema La Placita screens five classic films this May including Born Yesterday starring Judy Holliday May 3; Adam's Rib starring Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy May 10 and Gaslight with Ingrid Bergman and Angela Lansbury May 17. All screenings are at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free although a $3 contribution toward the Fox Theatre Foundation is encouraged.

Enjoy tasty native foods and learn more about the projects and goals of Native Seeds/SEARCH Thursday, May 3 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The free dinner (donations are requested) is catered by Sous Chef Catering and features turkey breast with blue corn bread and lime cream sauce, Cholla bud quiche, gazpacho with nopalitos, sage pinyon bread, chile cheese cornbread and assorted cookies. Proceeds from the dinner benefit the group and its conservation efforts.

A meeting, show and buffet featuring conjunto and trio musicians, vocalists and Central American performers takes place May 4 at 7 p.m. The free presentation features an optional barbeque dinner that costs $6 per person.

The Reno Gannon Memorial Jell-O Wrestling Extravaganza returns to Tucson May 6 from 4-7 p.m. The event, which is expected to raise $19,000 for the Southern Arizona AIDS Foundation (SAAF), features community members going head-to-head in a pit of 300 pounds of the jiggly stuff. In addition, there is a live auction and raffle. Prizes include a vacation-get-away-for-two to San Francisco, art, gift certificates and more. Admission is a suggested donation of $3. WHEN BOOKS BURN. University of Arizona Main Library. UA campus west of McKale Arena and north of the Football Stadium. 621-6441. When Books Burn is an exhibition of books denounced by the Nazis. The exhibit, which opens May 7, remembers the authors and their books and celebrates intellectual freedom. There is an opening reception May 10 at 5:30 p.m. in the Main Library followed by a presentation by authors Gerda Weissmann Klein and Kurt Klein at 7 p.m. Due to construction, library hours are subject to change. Six pairs of horses run neck-and-neck on each side of the Arizona/Mexico border May 5-6 at noon in a re-enactment of a legendary horse race that traced the borders of Douglas, Arizona and Agua Prieta, Mexico. There is also music by strolling mariachis, ballet folklorico performances, a country-western barn dance and more. Admission is $3. Upcoming BISBEE BIRDING FESTIVAL. Copper Queen Plaza. Old Bisbee, Arizona 432-1388. Time to flock to Bisbee for the Fiesta de las Aves International Migration Celebration May 11-13. The festival features field trips to famous and not-so-famous bird habitats on both sides of the Mexican border, educational and commercial exhibits, and a talk by Walt Anderson who presents May 13. There is also music by the Raw Deal Bluegrass Band and more. A $5 registration fee covers admission to all presentations,a hummingbird open house and hummingbird banding demonstration. Spend a day at the fiesta and enjoy crafts, entertainment and a wide variety of food May 12 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and May 13 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There is also a raffle featuring $2000 in prize money. Admission is free. The Monastery is located two miles south of St. David on Highway 80 between mile post 302 and 303 between the towns of Benson and Tombstone.
HOHOKAM TOUR. Fenster School. 8500 E. Ocotillo Drive. Take a comparative tour to two of the area's largest Hohokam archaeological sites--the Sabino Canyon Ruin and the University Indian Ruin. SOLAR POTLUCK. Catalina State Park. 885-7925. Citizens for Solar's Potluck Saturday, May 12 at Catalina State park is free and open to the public. There are more than 50 solar ovens cooking food for the dinner, which is served at 5 p.m. There are also solar energy demonstrations, live music and children's activities. Plus, a dance party gets underway after dinner. There is a small entry fee to the park.
