EMERSON STRING QUARTET. Tucson Convention Center Leo Rich Theater. 260 S. Church Ave. 577-3769. The Arizona Friends of Chamber Music present this celebrated American quartet April 25 at 8 p.m. The program includes Joseph Haydn's "Rider" Quartet, Dmitri Shostakovich's Quartet No. 14 and Felix Mendelssohn's Quartet in A Minor, Op. 13. Tickets cost $15.

INDIAN DEVOTIONAL MUSIC. Tucson Public Library. 101 N. Stone Ave. The Friends of Meher Baba present Pratap Ahir April 24 at 7 p.m. Ahir, a singer of Indian devotional music, accompanies himself on the harmonium, with his son Swaroop on tabla. Admission is free.

INTERNATIONAL MARIACHI CONFERENCE. TCC Music Hall and Arena. The conference, which raises funds for La Frontera Center and provides mental health and substance abuse services, kicks off with a dinner and evening of music April 24. Enjoy mariachi and baile folklorico workshops April 25--27. For ticket and workshop information call Lolie Gomez at 884-9920, ext. 243. A mariachi showcase featuring students from the workshops takes place April 26 at 7 p.m. Tickets cost $8.75. The Mariachi Espectacular concert, which features the most popular names in mariachi music, is April 27 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets range from $21 to $76 and are available at the TCC box office or by calling 791-4838. Finally, the Fiesta de Garibaldi, a traditional re-creation of Garibaldi Plaza in Mexico City, features food, game booths, mariachis and folklorico dancers. The fiesta takes place at Armory Park, at South Sixth Avenue and 13th Street, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

MERRIMAKERS. The senior citizen variety show takes its act on the road April 19 at 2 p.m. to Alterra Clare Bridge of Oro Valley, 10175 N. Oracle Road, and April 23 at 11 a.m. to House of Neighborly Service, 243 W. 33rd Street. Call 622-6973 for more information. Admission is free.

SONGWRITER SHOWCASE. Hazy Dayz Lounge Café. 187 N. park Ave. 884-0272. Natalie Josef performs original songs April 19 at 7:30 p.m. Also performing are Juan Holladay and Katy Coleville, and Devin Champlin, who plays rhythmic jazzy instrumentals. Admission is free.

TUCSON JAZZ SOCIETY. St. Philip's Plaza. Campbell Avenue and River Road. 903-1265. The latest trumpet sensation from new Orleans returns to burn in the Old Pueblo. The Irvin Mayfield Sextet performs April 22 from 6 to 9 p.m. Tickets cost $9 for members and $16 for non-members.

TUCSON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA, UA CHORAL ASSOCIATION. Tucson Convention Center Music Hall. 260 S. Church Ave. 882-8585. This concert features Witold Lutoslawski's Concerto for Orchestra, which transforms folk melodies into brilliant musical colors. Carl Orff's Carmina Burana occupies the second half of the program. Performances run April 19 and 20 at 8 p.m. and April 22 at 2 p.m. There is a free pre-concert talk April 19 and 20 at 7 p.m. Tickets range from $6 to $32.

WOMEN'S CHORUS. Catalina Foothills High School auditorium. 4300 E. Sunrise Drive. 297-2806. The Foothills Women's Chorus presents Buckskin and Spanish Lace April 22 at 3 p.m. The chorus performs a variety of music from traditional Western tunes to beautiful Spanish melodies. There is a suggested donation of $7 for adults and $3 for children.

Aspiring performing songwriters and musicians of all levels of ability are invited to showcase their acoustic musical talent each Tuesday from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Performance times are 15 minutes per person. On the last Tuesday of each month musicians may compete for the top honor of the evening. The winning musician is invited to participate in the Bookman's Open Mic Roundup for a cash prize of $250.
