BIKE FEST 2001. Biking and walking are excellent forms of exercise and transportation, and the City of Tucson Department of Transportation and Pima County Department of Environmental Quality's Clean Air Program encourages everyone to ride March 24 through April 8. Take advantage of the city's nearly 500 miles of bikeways. Twenty-six Bike Fest events celebrate bicycling and walking as transportation, including a bike and trike parade, kids' rides, valet bike parking at the Fourth Avenue Street Fair, historic neighborhood tours, rail and bikeway rides, a bike swap meet and more. All events are free with the exception of the BMX dirt jumping qualifiers and finals. Meet at the historic train depot on Toole Avenue March 24 at 8:30 a.m. for the bikes and trikes parade. Join fellow cyclists, skaters and scooters in a short parade in the downtown area. Prizes will be awarded for the largest school group, most funky bicycle, best-decorated bike and more. A screening of King of the Bingo Game, a chilling metaphor for the disenfranchisement of the African American community after Emancipation promised freedom and before the civil rights movement called that promise to task, takes place March 27 at 5 p.m. Admission is free. Designer/craftsperson O'Handrahan presents A Survey of Surface Design and Texture March 23 at 7 p.m. O'Handrahan shares her passion for the techniques of photo etching, texturizing and surfacing jewelry. The International Arts Society presents a screening of this Ken Loach film, March 23 at 7:30 p.m. What begins as a tender, comic romance becomes a lesson in the realities of political oppression. Admission is free. GARDEN ART EXHIBIT. Tucson Botanical Gardens. 2150 N. Alvernon Way. 326-9686. The garden art silent auction, which takes place through April 1 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., features more than 50 local artists who specialize in metal, clay, stone or tile. Individual pieces are displayed throughout the gardens and are on silent auction for two weeks. All proceeds benefit the gardens. Admission ranges in price from $1 to $4. GREY DOG TRADING COMPANY GALLERY. Plaza Palomino at the southeast corner of Swan Road and Fort Lowell. Kachina doll carvers Dennis Twa, Ross George and Robert Albert present and discuss their work March 23 from 3 to 6 p.m. and March 24 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. In addition, Kent McManis, author of A Guide to Hopi Katsina Dolls, signs copies of his book, which features the work of all three artists. The Fourth Avenue Merchants Association presents its spring street fair March 23-25 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. In addition to the work of hundreds of craftspeople, enjoy music by the Cobras, Top Dead Center, Latino Solido, Hector on Stilts, FourKiller Flats, LeeAnne Savage and others at the two main stages. The Blue Prairie Dogs, Stella Rampage, Tucson High School Performing Arts and Music Clubs, Al Foul and the Shakes and Folklorico de Roskruge, among others, take to the Winsett Outdoor Performance Center at various times throughout the weekend. Tenth St. PickAxe, a 95-minute film that documents the dramatic defense of the Warner Creek Forest, from the blockading of roads to mass arrests and a hunger strike through an explosive final scene in the county jail, is presented by producer/director/activist Tim Ream March 23 at 7 p.m. Admission is $5. The anthropology museum's annual open house includes guided exhibit tours, open storerooms and research labs and chatty curators. There is food, fun and entertainment for the whole family. Admission is free. TUCSON TRIATHLON/HISTORIC TUCSON.
