Continuing through March 24: Deconstructing History features new mixed-media collages by Nadia Hlibka that incorporate calligraphy, personal writings, gel transfers and photographs. Continuing through April 6: The Love of Art, which features works on loan from the faculty, staff and administration of Utterback Middle School, is a diverse exhibition that includes ceramics, watercolors, handmade paper, photographs and more. MELIORA ARCHITECTURAL GALLERY. 178 E. Broadway Blvd. 792-9544. Rammed Earth Solar Homes features earth buildings by Quentin Branch that stay warm in winter and cool in summer without artificial means. The exhibit opens March 3 and continues through May 26. For Domnitch Felton, "shemear" is the act of pushing and pulling paint across the canvas and allowing the colors and forms to work together in multitudes of playful layering. While some of the couples collaborate to produce pieces, others create work independently. Always, it is the common thread of glass that ties them together. Gibson employs lithography, photocopy transfers, monoprinting, cyanotype and traditional and solar plate etching to scrutinize the dimensions of self. ARIZONA BIENNIAL. Arizona's only juried biennial exhibition will be held at the Tucson Museum of Art June 8 through August 5. Arizona Biennial 2001 is open to all artists residing in Arizona, working in all media. The prospectus for the competition is available at the museum at 140 N. ART BIZ WORKSHOP. Pima Corporate and Community Education presents That's Art Biz, a three-day workshop March 2-4. The museum is seeking enthusiastic people who enjoy animal biodiversity, conservation and working with the public for its docent program. GRANTS. Arizona Commission on the Arts professional development grants are available throughout the year to help Arizona artists and representatives of small and mid-sized Arizona arts organizations attend out-of-state conferences, workshops, seminars and retreats that contribute to their professional growth. JURIED EXHIBIT. The Central School Project's Earth Day/San Pedro exhibition, which takes place April 21 through May 6, is an all-media juried exhibit with cash prizes up to $250. PAINTING WORKSHOP. Lois Griffel presents a weeklong workshop titled Painting the Impressionist Landscape at the Tubac Center of the Arts March 12-16. SCOTTSDALE PUBLIC ART PROGRAM. The program seeks an artist or poet or artist/poet team to develop, coordinate and facilitate workshops with teens from the New Foundation Treatment Center. The resulting original word art or poetry by the youths on the theme of "Everyday Magic" will be coordinated by the artist and reproduced on the exterior (and interior placards) of one City of Scottsdale bus. SCULPTURE COMPETITION. The Arts and Culture Commission of the City of Sedona announces a major exterior public art competition for professional artists residing in the U.S. One artist or team of artists will be selected via a competition to receive a commission to create a life-size bronze sculpture for the uptown area of Sedona. The general theme must preserve and respect the rich history of the area. Artist(s) will be responsible for the design, fabrication and shipment to the site and assist with the installation. T/PAC GROUP SHOWS. The Tucson/Pima Arts Council Community Gallery is seeking groups of artists for seven 5-week-long exhibitions. Artist associations, cooperatives, guilds and groups of three or more artists may submit an application form with 10 labeled slides per group, an annotated slide list and brief biographical information for each participant by 5 p.m. March 5. VANCOUVER ART. The City of North Vancouver has allocated funds to create a unique public art component for the newly enlarged Centennial Theatre. The city is seeking artists or a team of artists to create site-integrated artwork. Artists should be experienced with public art, budgeting, art fabrication and working with light. The prospectus, which does not require the preparation of a proposal, is open to all artists residing in Canada, Washington, Oregon, California and Arizona. The art budget is $83,500.
