ARIZONA GALLERY. UA Student Union. Continuing through March 18: Shemear features the paintings of Karen Domnitch Felton. For Domnitch Felton, "shemear" is the act of pushing and pulling paint across the canvas and allowing the colors and forms to work together in multitudes of playful layering. There is a reception for the artist February 23 from 6 to 8 p.m. Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.

DINNERWARE CONTEMPORARY ART GALLERY. 135 E. Congress St. 792-4503. Two POG members, composer Jay Vosk and poet Joe Amato, perform February 24 at 7 p.m. Admission is $5. Deconstructing History features new mixed-media collages by Nadia Hlibka that incorporate calligraphy, personal writings, gel transfers and photographs in order to explore various cultures. The exhibit opens February 27 and continues through March 24. There is an opening reception March 3 from 7 to 9 p.m. Also on display is a collaboration of works by Hlibka and photographer Denise Kramer. ELIZABETH CHERRY CONTEMPORARY ART. 441 E. Grant Road. 903-0577. An exhibition of paintings by Craig Clements opens February 24 and continues through April 7. Clements' colorful paintings are infused with a tad of kitsch and surrealism, featuring people and animals interacting in an otherworldly atmosphere. ARIZONA BIENNIAL. Arizona's only juried biennial exhibition will be held at the Tucson Museum of Art June 8 through August 5. Arizona Biennial 2001 is open to all artists residing in Arizona, working in all media. The prospectus for the competition is available at the museum at 140 N. ART WORKSHOPS. Science of Mind Center. 4500 E. Speedway Blvd. Suite 15. Syd Clayton-Seeber conducts a series of art workshops covering watercolors, collage, acrylics, faux stone wall sculptures, scratch art, budget batik and art from found objects the last Friday of each month from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The first workshop, Bold and Beautiful Watercolors, takes place February 23. CALL TO ARTISTS. Chicanos Por La Causa is accepting artwork for its fourteenth annual ¡Viva Tucson! Tex-Mex Jam. The artist's work must be colorful and appropriate for use as this year's signature multi-media piece. All works entered must depict the richness of the Soluthwest, with an emphasis on Latino music-culture. All work must be the original work of the artist. A cash prize of $500 will be awarded on Saturday, April 21 prior to the evening concert. The artist will have the opportunity to display work and be available for an autograph signing at ¡Viva Tucson! on April 21 and 22. PaperWorks and the Sonoran Collective for Paper and Book Artists presents fine printmaker Ellen Skotheim February 22 at 7 p.m. Skotheim discusses a series of prints she created that trace the history of her family--Sephardic Jews--during the past 500 years. JURIED EXHIBIT. The Central School Project's Earth Day/San Pedro Exhibition, which takes place from April 21 through May 6, is an all-media juried exhibit with cash prizes up to $250. A statewide symposium focusing on arts education research, Turning Myth into Reality: What Arts Education Can Do/Does, takes place February 23-24. Speakers include Eric Booth, James Catterall and Dick Deasy, who join local artists, administrators and educators to discuss arts education research and how it enhances student learning in the classroom. PHANTOM CALL TO ARTISTS. The Tucson Arts District Partnership is issuing a call to artists for its Phantom Program. Exhibition opportunities include placing artwork for the following sites: window galleries, TCC, sculpture gardens at various locations, artwork in a bus bench format, and mural or surface treatments for the La Placita parking garage. SEATLLE COURTHOUSE COMMISSION. The King County Public Art Program seeks artists for the historic King County Courthouse in downtown Seattle. Artwork opportunities are part of a major rehabilitation project planned for interior areas of the courthouse. Two projects are available: entrance artwork (an interior wall area flanking either side of a central staircase) and floor design (artist-designed floor treatment). T/PAC GROUP SHOWS. The Tucson/Pima Arts Council Community Gallery is seeking groups of artists for seven 5-week-long exhibitions. Artist associations, cooperatives, guilds and groups of three or more artists may submit an application form with 10 labeled slides per group, an annotated slide list and brief biographical information for each participant by 5 p.m. March 5.
