CENTER FOR CREATIVE PHOTOGRAPHY. UA campus, south of the pedestrian underpass at Speedway Boulevard and Park Avenue. 621-7968. John Reuter, photographer and director of Polaroid's 20x24 studio, discusses 20 years of collaborating with artists such as William Wegman and David Levinthal on the legendary camera he is the master of February 1 at 5:30 p.m. Continuing through February 11: Nagatani/Tracey Collaboration, 1983-1989 features the work of painter, photographer, installation artist and sculptor Patrick Nagatani and painter Andrée Tracey. DINNERWARE CONTEMPORARY ART GALLERY. 1335 E. Congress St. 792-4503. Ancestral Park features oil paintings by Betina Fink, which focus on a contemporary burial ground near her home. The exhibit continues through February 24. There is an opening reception February 3 from 7 to 9 p.m. A special exhibition in the Members' Gallery features guest artist Chen Hongshu and Dinnerware member artists. East Meets West is a cross-cultural exhibition of Eastern and Western approaches to the same subject matter. A Chinese painting workshop conducted by Chen Hongshu takes place February 10 from 10 a.m. to noon. The workshop costs $20, including materials. Pre-registration is required. Gallery hours are noon to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays, and 7 to 9 p.m. on Downtown Saturday Night.

HOTEL CONGRESS GALLERY. 311 E. Congress St. 903-0577. Women in Space, which features water-media works on canvas and wood and hanging steel birds painted with space imagery by Catherine Eyde, opens with a reception February 3 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. and continues through March 16. The gallery is open 24 hours a day.

MEDICINE MAN GALLERY. 7000 E. Tanque Verde Road. 722-7798. There is an opening reception February 2 from 6 to 8 p.m. with artists Jeff Aeling and Jan Mapes, who share their unique perspective of the natural world. Aeling's landscapes and Mapes' intimate portrayals of animals are on display through February. In addition, 40 paintings by Western artist James Guilford (Jimmy) Swinnerton are on exhibit. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and 1 to 4 p.m. Sundays.

MURPHEY GALLERY. St. Philip's in the Hills Episcopal Church. River Road and Campbell Avenue. An exhibit of plein-air watercolor landscapes by Judy Flynn and Southwestern landscape oils by Louise Harris opens with a reception February 4 from 2 to 4 p.m. Gallery hours are Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays from 2 to 4 p.m.

Continuing through February 24: Desert Soul features new works in clay by Thomas Kerrigan, who applies sophisticated textures and glazes to his earthenware forms. PHILABAUM GLASS GALLERY. 711 S. Sixth Ave. 884-7404. Married to Glass showcases the work of nine married couples, including Valerie and Rick Beck, Kate and Billy Bernstein, Kate Vogel and John Littleton and Shari and David Hopper. While some of the couples collaborate to produce pieces, others create work independently. Always, it is the common thread of glass that ties them together. The exhibit opens with a reception February 3 from 6 to 9 p.m. and continues through April 21. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays.

An exhibit of iron sculpture and furniture by Tony Valasquez and hand-painted Southwestern-style clothing by Julie Shandley opens February 1 and continues through March 1. Burn's works feature bold, brightly colored canvases of animals that elicit smiles, snickers, chuckles and belly laughs. Continuing through March 2: Sonoran Desert Icons is an exhibit of digitized images by Nile Root, which includes a decade's worth of photographs featuring icons of this region such as ocotillo and saguaro in bloom and javelinas rooting for food. There is a reception February 11 from noon to 2 p.m. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. The gallery is closed from noon to 1 p.m.

Everything is going to be ... alright is a reflection on our place in contemporary society as viewed from the past and the fictional future. The exhibit explores the primacy of the individual psyche, and the elaboration of the personal myth born of memory. Scott Ave. Continuing through February 21: Herb Stratford: Metaphor features assemblages of found and created elements that speak on several levels simultaneously and deal primarily with the mediation of experience. Stratford uses wax, salt, sand and magnifying lenses in his works, which serve as suggestive elements when juxtaposed. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.

The group exhibition is an examination undertaken by five artists who work in clay, fiber, video and anything that is free, confronting issues of artistic hierarchy. ARIZONA BIENNIAL. Arizona's only juried biennial exhibition will be held at the Tucson Museum of Art June 8 through August 5. Arizona Biennial 2001 is open to all artists residing in Arizona, working in all media. The prospectus for the competition is available at the museum at 140 N. Main Ave., by calling 624-2333 or by e-mailing cbodden@tucsonarts.com. All entry forms and slides must be received no later than 5 p.m. April 13. Notification of results will be mailed May 4.

ART CONTEST. The Greater Oro Valley Arts Council is accepting applications for its Art in Oro Valley contest. All works entered must depict a scene in Oro Valley and must be the original work of the artist. Cash prizes from $250 to $1,000 will be awarded at a reception February 17 from 2 to 6 p.m. Deadline for entries is February 2. CALL TO ARTISTS. Prescott College is seeking artists with two-dimensional work to participate in the Prescott Billboard Project, which is a progressive visual dialogue about how society defines itself. Opportunities exist for six billboard installations and 100-plus posters pertaining to a variety of social and political themes. CALL TO ARTISTS. St. Philip's in the Hills Murphey Gallery seeks artists working in all media (hanging art only) for its 2001-2002 season. The International Wildlife Museum is seeking enthusiastic people who enjoy animal biodiversity, conservation and working with the public for its museum docent program. Training begins March 5 from 9 a.m. to noon and continues on Mondays and Wednesdays for 10 consecutive weeks. There is a $20 fee that includes museum membership. FILM SUBMISSIONS. The Arizona International Film Festival is looking for new and innovative independent works to be part of the Reel Frontier Film and Video Competition. Film and video submissions are being accepted through February 12 in the categories of narrative and documentary features, documentary shorts, and narrative, experimental and animation shorts. Submissions must be an Arizona premiere and must have been completed between January 2000 and February 2001. Finalists in the Reel Frontier will be screened during the 2001 Arizona International Film Festival scheduled for April 19-29 at the Screening Room. Awards are presented to the best in each category, and "Best of Arizona." Entry fees are $50 for works that are 45 minutes and over and $30 for those under 45 minutes. Entries must be submitted on half-inch VHS for pre-screening. For festival screenings, finalists will be presented in 35mm or 16mm film formats or half-inch, 3/4-inch, Beta-SP and digital video formats. PERSPECTIVES ON SOUTHWESTERN CERAMICS. University of Arizona campus. The Arizona Archaeological and Historical Society Education Committee is offering classes in prehistoric, historic and contemporary ceramic traditions of the American Southwest. This four-session class is taught by two archaeologists, a cultural anthropologist and a Native Taos Pueblo potter. Classes begin February 6 and continue through February 26.
