Using words and symbols, Dunst paints intensely personal works on canvas and paper with acrylic and oil pastels. Continuing through February 15: Cristina Cardenas: A Flor de Piel features recent works by regional artist Cardenas. Her large-scale paintings reflect her desire to disrupt stereotypes of gender, religion and race and to increase cross-cultural dialogue. The artist discusses her work January 24 at 5:30 p.m. in the UA's Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering building.

PCC ART GALLERY. 2202 West Anklam Road. 206-6942. Photographer/digital montage artist Stephen Marc, painter Monica Aissa Martinez and sculptor Kelvin Yazzie exhibit their work January 22 through February 15. TEMPLE GALLERY. Temple of Music and Art. 330 S. Scott Ave. Continuing through February 21: Herb Stratford: Metaphor features assemblages of found and created elements that speak on several levels simultaneously and deal primarily with the mediation of experience. Stratford uses wax, salt, sand and magnifying lenses in his works, which serve as suggestive elements when juxtaposed. There is an opening reception January 19 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.

DINNERWARE CONTEMPORARY ART GALLERY. 1335 E. Congress St. 792-4503. New work by member artists and guests is on display through January 27. The show includes Michael Chittock's complex and aggressive paintings on paper, Sanda Raymond's Almost Zen series of small relief sculptures made of discarded materials, David Addix's mixed-media pieces exploring the spirituality of decay, and David Harvey's architectural images made with a digital camera. Gallery hours are noon to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays, and 7 to 9 p.m. on Downtown Saturday Night.

ELIZABETH CHERRY CONTEMPORARY ART. 441 E. Grant Road. 903-0577. How is everything? Everything is going to be . . . alright is a reflection on our place in contemporary society as viewed from the past and the fictional future. The exhibit, curated by Bob Nickas, features the works of Verne Dawson, Wayne Gonzales, Chuck Nanney, Amy O'Neill, Steven Parrino, Lisa Ruyter and John Tremblay. The exhibit explores the primacy of the individual psyche, and the elaboration of the personal myth born of memory. Continuing through February 5: Brooklyn Requiem: Bensonhurst and Crown Heights 1989-1994 is a photo documentary by Susan Harris. TUCSON-PIMA ARTS COUNCIL COMMUNITY GALLERY. 240 N. Stone Ave. Subverting the Prevailing Paradigm from the artist group Five Wily Muses continues through February 9. The group exhibition is an examination undertaken by five artists who work in clay, fiber, video and anything that is free, confronting issues of artistic hierarchy. UA MUSEUM OF ART. UA campus near Park Avenue and Speedway Boulevard. 621-7567. Continuing through February 25: Kenneth Noland: The Navajo Tapestries is a literal weaving of contemporary art aesthetics and traditional Navajo arts. Noland's minimalist drawings and paintings were the templates for three tapestries by Navajo weavers Sadie Curtis, Rose Owens and Mary Lee Begay. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 5 .m. ARIZONA BIENNIAL. Arizona's only juried biennial exhibition will be held at the Tucson Museum of Art June 8 through August 5. Arizona Biennial 2001 is open to all artists residing in Arizona, working in all media. The prospectus for the competition is available at the museum at 140 N. Main Avenue, by calling 624-2333 or by e-mailing cbodden@tucsonarts.com. All entry forms and slides must be received no later than 5 p.m. April 13. Notification of results will be mailed May 4.

ART CONTEST. The Greater Oro Valley Arts Council is accepting applications for its Art in Oro Valley contest. All works entered must depict a scene in Oro Valley and must be the original work of the artist. Cash prizes from $250 to $1,000 will be awarded at a reception February 17 from 2 to 6 p.m. Deadline for entries is February 2. Call the Greater Oro Valley Arts Council at 797-3959 for an entry form and contest guidelines.

ARTISTS ROSTER. The Tucson/Pima Arts Council is establishing a juried roster of Pima County artists of all levels of experience interested in public art. The roster will be used to identify artists for a variety of government-funded construction projects throughout Tucson and Pima County on an as-needed basis. Building developers interested in identifying artists for commercial commissions may also use the roster. Artists must submit a letter of interest, up to 10 slides of artwork, a descriptive slide list and résumé by January 19 to T/PAC, 240 N. Stone Avenue, Tucson, AZ 85701. CALL TO ARTISTS. WomanKraft is accepting work in all media, including poetry, about animals, animals and humans, animals and the natural world and animals together. The exhibit opens February 3 at 7 p.m. The second exhibit is Drawing Down the Muse, a celebration of women's creativity. This exhibit includes all women who are teaching workshops or attending the weekend gathering by the same name. Work must be received by March 31.

CALL TO ARTISTS. St. Philip's in the Hills Murphey Gallery seeks artists working in all media (hanging art only) for its 2001-2002 season. The Old Fort Lowell Neighborhood Association is looking for professional and amateur artists to participate in its Fiesta de Arte, a juried indoor/outdoor art show to be held at the historic San Pedro chapel in late spring. HOLOCAUST POETRY AND PHOTO CONTEST. The Hillel Foundation is seeking entries for its Holocaust Memorial Poetry and Photo Contest. This year's theme is From Darkness to Light: Finding Hope and Tolerance. The contest is open to high school and college students as well as college grads.
