ELIZABETH CHERRY CONTEMPORARY ART. 441 E. Grant Road. 903-0577. How is everything? Everything is going to be -- alright is a reflection on our place in contemporary society as viewed from the past and the fictional future. The exhibit, curated by Bob Nickas, features the works of Verne Dawson, Wayne Gonzales, Chuck Nanney, Amy O'Neill, Steven Parrino, Lisa Ruyter and John Tremblay. Subverted Realities: Photographs and Paintings by Joel Peter Witkin, Daniel Martin Diaz and Rocky Schenck opens January 9 and continues through March 17. There is an opening reception January 13 from 7 to 10 p.m. The exhibit explores the primacy of the individual psyche, and the elaboration of the personal myth born of memory. JOSEPH GROSS GALLERY. UA campus. Southeast corner of Park Avenue and Speedway Boulevard. 626-4215. Cristina Cardenas: A Flor de Piel features recent works by regional artist Cristina Cardenas. Her large-scale paintings reflect her desire to disrupt stereotypes of gender, religion and race and to increase cross-cultural dialogue. The exhibit opens January 10 and continues through February 15. There is an opening reception January 12 from 5 to 7 p.m. In addition, the artist discusses her work January 24 at 5:30 p.m. in the UA's Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering building.

LIONAL ROMBACH GALLERY. UA campus. Southeast corner of Park Avenue and Speedway Boulevard. 626-4215. Time, Place and Relationship features paintings and mixed-media works by Kristen Heist and Smita Kohl Mathews. The show looks at issues of examination, preservation and conservation in life and the moment. The exhibit opens January 10 and continues through February 15. TUCSON-PIMA ARTS COUNCIL COMMUNITY GALLERY. 240 N. Stone Ave. Subverting the Prevailing Paradigm from the artist group Five Wily Muses opens January 5 and continues through February 9. The group exhibition is an examination undertaken by five artists who work in clay, fiber, video and anything that is free, confronting issues of artistic hierarchy. There is an opening reception January 6 from 5 to 7 p.m. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.

Continuing through January 7: Contemporary Southwest Image XV: The Stonewall Foundation Series features the provocative paintings of Joanne Kerrihard. Joe Labate uses camera-less ink jet images of common and unusual found objects, juxtaposed in theatrical arrangements directly on the digital scanner in the exhibit Directions. Contemporary glass works from the TMA collection, plus several pieces on loan from local artists and galleries, are also on display. ARIZONA BIENNIAL. Arizona's only juried biennial exhibition will be held at the Tucson Museum of Art June 8 through August 5. Arizona Biennial 2001 is open to all artists residing in Arizona, working in all media. The prospectus for the competition is available at the museum at 140 N. Main Ave., by calling 624-2333 or by e-mailing cbodden@tucsonarts.com. All entry forms and slides must be received no later than 5 p.m. March 26.

ARTISTS ROSTER. The Tucson/Pima Arts Council is establishing a juried roster of Pima County artists of all levels of experience interested in public art. The roster will be used to identify artists for a variety of government-funded construction projects throughout Tucson and Pima County on an "as needed" basis. Building developers interested in identifying artists for commercial commissions may also use the roster. Artists must submit a letter of interest, up to 10 slides of artwork, a descriptive slide list and résumé by January 19 to T/PAC, 240 N. Stone Ave., Tucson, AZ 85701. CALL TO ARTISTS. The City of Tucson is seeking artists to create artwork on the exterior of four 15-passenger shuttles for expanded circulator routes downtown. A pre-submission information meeting for artists interested in applying for these commissions will be held January 9 at 4 p.m. in the lower-level meeting room of the Tucson-Pima Main Library, 101 N. HOLOCAUST POETRY AND PHOTO CONTEST. The Hillel Foundation is seeking entries for its Holocaust Memorial Poetry and Photo Contest. VIEWS OF ST. PHILIPS. The St. Philip's in the Hills Gallery committee seeks art in all media for a month-long exhibition titled Views of St. Philips to be held in May. WATERCOLOR CLASSES. Arte Spazio Gallery. 5101 N. Oracle Road. Terence Leach is now accepting students for two watercolor classes that run through February 7. Color Explorations (9 a.m. to noon) investigates the use of color for sunlight, low-light and moonlight effects, while Applied Techniques (1 to 4 p.m.) focuses on specific techniques to convey desert trees, rocks, water variations and associated textures.
