SOL Y CANTO. Temple Emanu-El. 225 N. Country Club Road. This group performs Afro-Latin rhythms with Spanish guitar November 11 at 8 p.m. The ensemble, which features musicians from Cuba, Puerto Rico and New Mexico, has an album in Billboard's Top 10 World Music chart. Tickets are $12 in advance and $14 at the door, and are available at Antigone Books, Enchanted Earthworks, Hear's Music and Zip's University.

COWS WITH GUNS. Mat Bevel Institute. 530 N. Stone Ave. 628-4318. Dana Lyons' Cows with Guns is a mix of comedy-country-grange-rock and fusion that features sing-alongs and ballads. So grab your honey (or favorite cow), but leave your gun at home, and enjoy a night of music November 11 at 9 p.m. Tickets are $5 in advance and $7 at the door.

Jazz guitar legend John McLaughlin reunites with tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain November 15 at 7:30 p.m. to revive their 1970s band Shakti, fusing jazz with the sounds of the tabla, violin and percussion. WESTERN MUSIC FESTIVAL. Four Point Sheraton Hotel, 330 S. Freeway, and the Tucson Convention Center 220 S. Church Ave. The Western Music Festival includes a grand show called Living the Legacy, featuring performances by Riders in the Sky, Jessie the Yodelin' Cowgirl and Johnny Western November 16 at 7 p.m. And if you have a hankerin' to become a country-western music star, sign up for the professional songwriting class/clinic for some hands-on instruction on lyric writing and more November 15 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Advance registration is $45; the cost is $50 at the door. Linda Lou & the Drifters perform a variety of music including folk, bluegrass and country-western November 12 from 3 to 6 p.m. Also on the bill is cowboy poet Shad Pease, whose poetry was inspired by his many years spent on ranches in Wyoming and Colorado. Rounding out the afternoon is country-western singer and guitarist Lou Stebner joined by bass player Slim Rost. Free and open to the public.

YOUNG ARTISTS COMPETITION. Tucson Symphony Society. 1275 N. Sixth Avenue. 326-4433. The final event in the Southern Arizona Young Artists Competition takes place November 11 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The free program features performers from elementary school through college who will compete in three age divisions, as well as in piano, woodwinds, brasses and strings.

DESERT VOICES. This gay and lesbian chorus is seeking singers for its 12th season, Voices and Visions, which includes Celtic, R&B and Motown music. Rehearsals take place at the Armory Park Senior Center. Volunteers for general office work, including a bulk-mailing coordinator, a ticket master and a concessions coordinator, are also needed.
