KIDS
ARCHAEOLOGY FOR ALL. Old Pueblo Archaeology Center presents Open, a chance for kids ages 5 and up to learn about different cultures by participating in the excavation of a make-believe archaeological site. In addition to dig time, each session also includes an indoor craft activity and instruction in artifact cleaning and interpretation. Cost is $35 for four one-and-a-half hour Saturday sessions, or $10 per individual session. Special rates and dates available for groups. Call 798-1201 for registration and information.
Listings BACK TO SCHOOL. Tucson Shalom House is a non-denominational, non-profit organization that provides housing, counseling, and support services to homeless women and their children. The children are in need of school supplies and new school clothes. Donations of notebooks, pencils, pencil boxes, tablets and filler paper, markers, glue sticks, etc., gift certificates or cash donations for clothes and shoes can help make a homeless child's transition back to school a more gentle one. BUILD-A-BIKE. BICAS Youth Underground Build-A-Bike program is an eight-session program for adults and kids, offering extensive hands-on training for basic bicycle mechanics. In addition to learning new skills, you'll also be helping your community by fixing up old bikes and getting them back on the streets. Students are required to complete a 25-hour apprenticeship and final exam to earn their first bicycle. Classes are from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursdays, and from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturdays. KID FEST '97. Tucson Convention Center. 260 S. Church Ave. Kids rule from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, November 2, at Kid Fest '97. This monster-sized event showcases interactive exhibits, celebrity appearances, a jumping castle, carnival activities, a petting zoo and so much more. HARVEST CARNIVAL. Faith Community Church. 2551 W. Orange Grove Road. Families are invited to celebrate at Harvest Carnival '97 from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, October 31. HAUNTED SAFE HOUSE. The Northwest Fire District presents its 12th annual Halloween Safe House event for trick or treaters from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday, October 31. Kids will enjoy games, candy, haunted rooms, and not-so-scary fun rooms, too. Safe Houses include: 1520 W. Orange Grove Road, 8165 N. Wade Road and 11901 W. Grier Road in Marana. Tucson Parks and Recreation Performing Arts Unit presents two new Teen programs: Teen Combo Ensemble, which incorporates both music and dance in a performance-oriented venue; and The Self-Esteem Theatre, offering an opportunity to create and perform original theatrical productions. Both programs are free, and are offered at two locations: The Randolph Recreation Center, 200 S. Alvernon Way, and The El Rio Neighborhood Center, 1390 W. Speedway. The Tucson Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence presents the following free classes to help give families an informed edge: BASICS (Building A Strong Independent Child) provides classes, activities, discussion and support for parents and their children, infancy through adolescence, with the goal of learning to help our children to be healthy, substance-free, and caring individuals.
