ARTISTS ON ICE. The Screening Room. 127 E. Congress St. 622-2262. Artists on Ice, an air-conditioned showcase of Tucson's most talented emerging poets, musicians, filmmakers, and others, meets from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Thursdays. This power-packed evening of non-stop entertainment is free, with donations gratefully accepted. Call 622-2262 for information.

Listings CARE FAIR. Pueblo High School. 3500 S. 12th Ave. More than 35 agencies are participating in this year's Children's Assistance and Resource Event from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, August 1, and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday August 2. There is day care and Head Start enrollment, DES, AFDC, employment and utility assistance, food boxes, food stamps, WIC, immunizations, developmental screening, paternity services, social security cards, clothing exchange, and bus passes. Some services have eligibility requirements. Spanish speaking staff will be available. Call 881-1794 for information.

DOWNTOWN SATURDAY. The downtown Arts District is the place to play all day and all night on August 2. Enjoy the polka, the mambo, and more from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. with the Pulse World Beat Ensemble at the Ronstadt Transit Center. Boogie your way to Arizona Alley from 7 to 10 p.m. for Eb Eberline performing original river, railroad, and night songs. Buzz on down to the Winsett Park Stage, 316 N. Fourth Ave., for a taste of Honeywagon from 7 to 10 p.m. For information on other events, stop by the booth on Sixth Avenue and Congress Street; or call the Arts District Partnership at 624-9977.

HOLY SMOKES. Step into a pair of fire fighter's boots, and sit behind the wheel of a fire engine from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, August 2. Northwest Fire District opens the doors on the following station locations: 1520 W. Orange Grove Road, 4701 N. La Cholla Blvd., 4151 W. Camino del Cerro, 3701 W. Quazar Road, 8165 N. Wade Road, 5601 W. Trails End Road, and 11901 W. Grier Road, Marana. Everyone is invited to tour the stations, talk with the fire fighters, and get a up-close and personal look at the equipment. MOON WALK. The Valley of the Moon. 2544 E. Allen Road, north of Prince Road, east of Tucson Boulevard. Escape the searing summer heat with a cool "Moon Stroll" from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, August 6. Take your time and wander through the pathways, caverns, pools, and gardens of this 74-year-old Arizona Historic Site, sure to delight children and adults of all ages. Admission is free, but donations are appreciated. Call 323-1331 for information.

PHOTO-FRENZY. Sabbar Shrine Temple. 450 S. Tucson Blvd. The Arizona Photographic Collectors present their fourth annual Club Auction at 8 p.m. Thursday, August 7. Bring your unwanted cameras, lenses, flashes, darkroom stuff, etc. Equipment inspection is from 6 to 7:50 p.m. Call 529-5072 for information.

SUMMER SUN DRIVE. The Tucson Planning Council for the Homeless needs your donations of unused or new water bottles, sunscreen, summer hats and sunglasses to help Tucsonans on the street fight the summer heat. Drop off your donations at any of the following locations: The American Red Cross, 3915 E. Broadway; St. Francis de Sales Church, 1375 S.
