Cheap Thrills

CUMULUS CROWDS: Okay, all that rain dancing hasn't yet amounted to much. But just because the sky isn't falling on our heads doesn't mean our ears can't swim in a melodic sea under sulking skies. Fourth Avenue's free weekly music fest continues with Monsoon Madness, bursting into action at 7 p.m. on the Winsett Park stage, between Seventh and Eighth streets.

Cheap Thrills This Thursday's showcase busts out the belly dancers, with bands The Gallery and For Winter Relief taking center stage.

Show is outdoors, open to all, and continues till 10:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 31. Admission is free. For information, call 624-5004.

CURBSIDE CULTURE: Another urban romp gets underway after dark this Downtown Saturday Night, August 2, all around the Arts District. Hot on the roster this balmy eve will be local faves Pulse World Beat Ensemble, performing from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. at the Ronstadt Transit Center. Under the direction of Mike Olson, this colorful bunch plays everything from original global music and mambo to polka, traversing the continents from Africa to Mexico.

And Tucson's own travelin' man, Eb Eberline, once again unpacks the dobro, guitar and harmonica for his original river, railroad and night songs from 7 to 10 p.m. in the Arizona Alley. The Tucson Musicians' Showcase features Honeywagon, performing their ornery brand of rockabilly and honky-tonk from 7 to 10 p.m. at Winsett Park, located on Fourth Avenue between Seventh and Eighth streets.

All events are free. Downtown restaurants and galleries will also be open for your critical perusal and chowing pleasure. For information, call 624-9977.

THE MOLLYS ARE COMING! It seems only yesterday that they were just hometown folk, a well-known Tucson secret. Of course, that yesterday stretched on for years as dedicated members of eclectic Celtic folk-band the Molly's kept plucking away for adoring local crowds.

Now they've finally broken through the cactus curtain with Hat Trick, currently a respectable Number 42 on the Crossroads Top 45 music charts. The recording has also garnered plenty of juicy reviews. The Washington Post calls it, "Full of spirited pub songs, pushed along by accordion and mandolin licks straight out of the emerald hills of Ireland."

And The Salina Journal describes a Mollys performance as, "At least as much hell as a tight band that bounces complex rhythms and plays Irish folk songs with a Mexican-American influence can muster."

Perhaps the best--or most authentic--testimonial comes from Ireland's Hot Press, which says, "What they play is Irish Tex-Mex and I promise you, you've never heard the like."

If you've also never heard the like, get with the program and reel yourself out to welcome them home for one performance only, from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Saturday, August 2, in the Boondocks Lounge, 3306 N. First Ave. Admission is $4. Call 690-0991 for details. TW
