Filler Cheap Thrills

ART WALK: Take a gander at the Dowtown Arts District from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, July 18, during Art Walk. The weekly after-hours event is an excellent time to stroll through downtown galleries, visit with shop owners and get some exercise after the heat of the day has passed. Free docent-guided tours of public art displays begin at 5:30 p.m. at the Park Inn Suite Santa Rita Hotel, 88 E. Broadway. For a walking tour map and list of participating galleries, call 624-9977.

FOURTH DIMENSION: Rehydrate your soul with Monsoon Madness, a weekly outdoor music extravaganza on Winsett Park stage, Fourth Avenue between Seventh and Eighth streets. The groove fest continues at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 18, with Stinky Slinky, Helldriver and Liquid Smoke. This is a free, all-ages event. They'll probably keep you on your feet most of the time, but bringing a lawn chair or blanket is highly recommended. Call 624-5004 for information.

CLOSE ENCOUNTER: A strange visitor has sent notice of an unusual disturbance in our atmosphere, scheduled for Saturday, July 20, at Berky's on Fourth, 424 N. Fourth Ave. Plug Happy, a three-man band from New Mexico (they have the inside track on all things extraterrestrial), promises a 20-minute rock experience culminating in a live alien abduction. Hey, there's no cover, so what've you got to lose? Shows are at 6 and 7 p.m., with live music continuing throughout the evening. Call 622-0376 for information.

CONTRA DANCE: Pull yourself up by the bootstraps and join the Tucson Friends of Traditional Music in their monthly contra dance, with live music, professional callers and more do-si-dos than you can shake a fiddle stick at. If the last time you asked someone to dance was under duress in your junior high years, it's time to give it another try. Take a two-step in the right direction from 8 to 11 p.m. Saturday, July 20, at the Armory Park Senior Center, 220 S. Fifth Ave. Admission is by donation. Call 629-0429 for information.

POETIC MUSING: The Book Mark, 5001 E. Speedway, is calling all poets for an open reading of original poetry starting at 7 p.m. Saturday, July 20. You don't have to get slammed or order some esoteric caffeinated beverage to get an audience here. Simply box up that undiscovered literary masterpiece and join in this free, open forum for thoughtful writers and listeners. Call 881-5180 for information.

YOZEUM: Yeah, we know you never would've found this one tucked away in our museum listings, so here it is: Tucson's own tribute to toys on a string. Don Duncan Jr., son of the late great founder of Duncan Yo-Yos, documents the evolution of one of America's favorite toys with Yo-Yo memorabilia and designs from the 1920s to the present. The Yozeum, 2900 N. Country Club Road, is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Admission is free. Call 322-0100 for information. TW
