GEEK TREATS: Whether you believe it or not, science can indeed be simultaneously fun and educational. At least that's the word coming from those beefy noggins over at Bookman's Used Books. To prove the point, they'll host the Mad Science Show from 11 a.m. to noon on Thursday, July 16.

Experience "chills and thrills" as the Mad Science guys reveal their technical finesse to the delight of the whole family. And this cerebral extravaganza is entirely free.

Cheap Thrills Bookman's is at 1930 E Grant. Road. For details, call 325-5767.

LATIN FOOTAGE: The UA's excellent summer VideoTENSIONS '98 series continues with a southward glance with "VideoMEXICO." Mexican video artist, curator and photographer Juan José Diaz Infante will showcase some of the best video work emerging from his country at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, July 16, in the UA Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering Building, Room 202, at Speedway and Mountain Avenue. Admission is free. Call 621-7352 for information.

Infante will present additional videos at 8 p.m. Friday, July 17, at The Screening Room, 127 E. Congress St. Admission is $4. For details, call 622-2262.

MUSEUM MONEY: There's no shortage of artists in the Naked Pueblo, but there is a limited amount of space where they can show their work. Now a local group is promoting a plan to create a Museum of Contemporary Art, which would provide exhibition space while simultaneously helping downtown redevelopment efforts. (See "The Block Busters," Tucson Weekly, June 11). You can learn more and help the effort by attending a fundraising party from 7 to 11 p.m. Thursday, July 16, at 821 N. Main Ave. The party will feature a live flame performance by artist Nadia Hagen, a slide show of work by local artists, and music by Jimmy's Dirty Jazz Trio. A $10 donation at the door is recommended. For more information, call 624-5019, or visit the group's website at www.moca-tucson.org.

CLOUD WORKS: The Obsidian Gallery opens its creative doors for the annual Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition and Monsoon Party. This art fest will feature plenty of hot dogs, beer and other refreshments, in addition to some of Tucson's finest art. The exhibition will include works by Claude Bailey, Michael Chittock, Eric Cooper, Steven Derks, Dan Enwright, Selina Littler, Joel Murphy, Jim Pollack, Daniel Ptasnik, Alfredo Rivera and Jim Rusk.

Party runs from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, July 18, in the Obsidian Gallery, 4340 N. Campbell Ave., in St. Philip's Plaza. Call 577-3598 for information. TW
