Earth Day Events

EARTH DAY ARTS FESTIVAL. Spirit Weavers hosts the Spirit of the Earth Arts and Crafts Festival from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 20, and Sunday, April 21, at Ventana Village Shopping Center, Sunrise Drive and Kolb Road. Featured are more than 80 artisans, along with presentations by naturalist Jerry Brewer and the Nature Conservancy. Partial proceeds benefit the Nature Conservancy. Admission and parking are free. EARTH DAY '96. The Tucson Children's Museum hosts the Earth Day Festival '96 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 20, at 200 S. Sixth Ave. The day's events include a parade, marching bands, arts groups, exhibits and food booths. Call 620-6142 for information.

EARTH DAY PATAGONIA. Celebrate Earth Day and the grand opening of the Nature Conservancy's Patagonia-Sonoita Creek Visitor Center on Saturday, April 20. Events kick off with a reading by Geoffrey Platts at 7 p.m. Friday, April 19 at the Visitor Center. Admission is a $15 donation per person. Saturday's Earth Day activities run from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., and include bird watching, guided tours, storytelling, hikes, and plant and animal displays. Regular preserve hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. Take Highway 82 to Patagonia, head west on Fourth Avenue, and south on Pennsylvania. Call (520) 394-2400 for information.

DOWNTOWN SATURDAY. Do the day and night downtown Saturday, April 20, and mingle among artists, musicians, vendors and unexpected visions of delight. Check out the Earth Day festivities at the Children's Museum from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Spend a "Folk Night" downtown with bluegrass and folk music showcased throughout the area. Musicians include the Arnold/ Klingenfus Ensemble, Ice Nine, The Rusty Boys and Linda Lou Reed. Rancho Venado offers horse drawn wagon rides. Cost for rides is $5 per couple and $1 per child. CHRISTMAS IN APRIL. Volunteers are needed to help with renovation projects for the Christmas in April charity event Saturday, April 20. Thirty-three homes in the Pueblo Gardens neighborhood are this year's recipients. Donations of construction materials and other items are still needed. Students at Keeling and Pueblo Gardens elementary schools have organized a competitive penny drive with donation sites located at the schools and various businesses, in hopes of raising enough money to add two more houses to the list. RUMMAGE SALE. The Junior League of Tucson hosts its 38th annual rummage sale from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 20, at Rillito Race Track, located on First Avenue south of River Road. Proceeds benefit Junior League charity projects. Call 299-5753 for information.

WAILA FESTIVAL. The Arizona Historical Society hosts the eighth annual Waila Festival from 5 to 11 p.m. Saturday, April 20, at AHS, 949 W. Second St. The festival brings the lively social dance music and culture of the Tohono O'odham Indian Nation to Tucson featuring T.O. Combo as the host band, along with the Cisco Band, the Santa Rosa Band and the Lopez Brothers. Tohono O'odham artisans and food booths are also featured. Admission is free. TEKAKWITHA FESTIVAL. The Tekakwitha Indian Festival gathers from noon to 10 p.m. Saturday, April 20, and Sunday, April 21, at the Old Pascua Neighborhood Center, 785 W. Sahuaro St. Event features food, arts and crafts, games, music and dancing. Proceeds benefit programs that serve the basic needs of more than 500 Native American families in the Tucson area. PETPAUSE. Bookman's Used Books and the Humane Society of Tucson host a Family Fun Day from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, April 20, at 3733 W. Ina Road. Proceeds benefit the Humane Society's research library for animal welfare and related issues. The event features a library donation table, on-site pet adoptions, free pet care information, merchandise discounts, live music, pet parade, art workshop for children, clowns, magicians and more. SUN SOUNDS BEER FESTIVAL. Sun Sounds hosts the ninth annual Great Tucson Beer Festival from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, April 21, at Plaza Palomino, located at Ft. Lowell and Swan roads. Beer samples from around the world, along with non-alcoholic beverages and tempting foods, highlight this event to benefit Sun Sounds, a non-profit radio information station for visually and physically impaired and learning disabled persons. Tickets are $25 and may be purchased at Uncle Bob's Popcorn, 5-Star Electronics, Plaza Palomino, Cardinal Coffees, Trader Joe's, the RumRunner, Plaza Liquors, Magee Road Liquors and Orange Grove Brew and Vine. PHYSICS PHUN NIGHT. The UA Department of Physics hosts its 12th annual Physics Phun Night at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 18, at the Physics-Atmospheric Sciences building, Room 201. ORACLE OAKS FESTIVAL. The Oracle Community Senior Center hosts the 11th annual Oracle Oaks Festival Saturday, April 20, in downtown Oracle, located off highway 77 north of Tucson. Festivities include a parade, swap meet, antique car show, arts and crafts, food booths, carnival and the Oracle Fire Department 30th anniversary dance.
