Filler Cheap Thrills

HIGH SCHOOL RULES: In spite of the fact Canyon del Oro High School receives no district funding for its productions, the fine arts department has persevered over the last 15 years, giving students the opportunity to stage, sing and dance in a variety of contemporary Broadway musicals. See what they can do in Crazy for You, a Gershwin musical comedy with performances at 7 p.m. March 28 through 30 in the school auditorium, 25 W. Calle Concordia. Tickets are $4 adults, $3 for students and seniors.

ART SMART: Raise your hand if you remember the bygone Pima County bureaucrat who announced publicly that public art was synonymous with a statue of a guy on a horse. Better yet, attend Public Forums on Public Art, a new series of informal discussions on Tucson's public art and artists, hosted by the Tucson/Pima Arts Council. Public art administrators from Phoenix, Tempe and Scottsdale show slides of recently completed projects and share plans for upcoming art opportunities at 3 p.m. Friday, March 29, at 240 N. Stone Ave. Call 624-0595 for information.

WHITE ELEPHANT SALE: You won't find any extra-large albino mammals, but you may find some other rare and beautiful items, as small as a pendant or large as a hand-crafted bed, at the 15th annual Arizona Historical Society Docent Council's White Elephant Sale. Gaze with the herd from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday, March 29 and 30, at 949 E. Second St. Donations are still being accepted, all contributions are tax deductible and pick-up is free. Proceeds benefit AHS educational programs. Call 628-5774 for information.

TEX-MEX JAM: Stomp your feet with Chicanos por la Causa at the ninth annual Viva Tucson! Tex-Mex Jam from noon to 10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, March 30, and 31, at the Kennedy Park Fiesta Area, 3700 S. La Cholla at Ajo Way. Feast on a variety of ethnic foods and enjoy live music by national acts La Diferenzia and Fama. Admission is free. Proceeds from food and beverage sales benefit Chicanos por la Causa's Tucson social services, including youth enhancement and economic development programs.

DESERT SURVIVORS SALE: Desert Survivors celebrates "15 years of nurturing plants and people" with a gala spring plant sale with thousands of cool native Southwestern plants, shrubs, herbs from La Frontera, seeds and seedlings from Wildlands Restoration...all to help create a unique sense of place and wonder in your own backyard. Sale hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, March 30 and 31, at Desert Survivors Nursery, 1020 W. 22nd St. Call 791-9309 for information. TW
