Opening This Week

BORDERLANDS THEATRE. Southwest Center for Music. 2175 N. Sixth Ave. Saturday, January 13 only: Borderlands 10th Anniversary Celebration, featuring Pathway to Divadom, a humorus, one-woman playette by Diane Rodriquez, and hot Latin jazz by Rafael Moreno and Descarga. The fun begins at 7 p.m. with appetizers and a no-host bar, and continues until midnight. Tickets are $20, available at Jeff's Classical Records, Antigone Books and the Borderlands Theatre office. GASLIGHT THEATRE. 7010 E. Broadway. 886-9428. Opening January 12 and continuing through March 23: Dirty Deal and the Lucky Lady, a western musical comedy about a good guy, a bad guy and beautiful lady trying to save her saloon. There will be a preview show at 7 p.m. Thursday, January 10. Tickets are $12.95, $10.95 seniors/students/active military, and $6 for children. Performances are at 7 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, 7 and 9:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 3 and 7 p.m. Sunday. There is no 3 p.m. show Sunday, January 14. Reservations are required. Call 886-9428.

THIRD STREET KIDS. Temple of Music and Art Cabaret Theatre. 330 S. Scott Ave. Sunday, January 14 only: Expressions, a collaboration of original and commisioned works including choreography by ORTS artistic director Anne Bunker, new music by music director Jeff Moyer, poetry reading and a performance by Hal Safron called Mother Goose Gumshoe. Third Street Kids is the sole program run by Arts For All, Inc., a non-profit organization providing after-school programs in the performing arts for children with disabilities. ARIZONA THEATRE COMPANY. Temple of Music and Art. 330 S. Scott Ave. Continuing through January 27: Fires in the Mirror: Crown Heights, Brooklyn and Other Identities, an exploration of race and community based on the 1991 clash between Hasidic Jews and Blacks living in Crown Heights, written by Anna Deavere Smith. By Design, a free, open forum for discussion among artists, scholars and community members, meets at 7 p.m. Friday, January 22. Scott Ave. Continuing through January 13 in the Cabaret Theatre: Guilt and Long Distance Phone Call, two short comedies by Tempe playwright Michael Grady. Guilt portrays a man being interrogated by his subconscious. Long Distance Phone Call examines two men working the telephones at a crisis hotline center who are visited by aliens and Elvis. Performances begin at 8 p.m. There will be a post-performance discussion on January 11 and 12. Tickets are $7, $5 students and are available at the door.
