ACOUSTIC SHOWCASE. Southwest Center for Music. 2175 N. Sixth Ave. The Tucson Kitchen Musicians Association presents The Tucson Musicians Acoustic Showcase from 8 to 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, January 16. The evening features 16 year old boogie-woogie blues prodigy Arthur Migliazza and finger-picking guitarist Shep Cooke. Admission is $5, $2 for children. Beverages will be available for purchase. The acoustic showcase is presented the third Tuesday of each month and is open to local musicians. Call Elise at 326-9021 for information on performing and the show.

ARIZONA OPERA. TCC Music Hall. 260 S. Church Ave. 791-4266. Arizona Opera Company performs Das Rheingold, one story in the Wagnerian tetralogy Der Ring des Nibelungen, at 7:30 p.m. January 11 and 13, and at 2 p.m. January 14. Das Rheingold is mythical tale of a greedy dwarf, lustful gods and a powerful ring. Performance is sung in German. CENTENNIAL HALL. UA Campus, east of the Main Gate at Park Avenue and University Boulevard. 621-3341. The Klezmer Conservatory Band brings Eastern European Jewish folk music to Centennial Hall at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, January 16. Klezmer's "Yiddish Soul Music" ranges from foot-stomping traditional tunes to bittersweet songs of the homeland. Tickets range from $13 to $23, with a $4 discount for UA employees, students and children. Student rush tickets are available for $5, 45 minutes before the performance. PICCOLO RECITAL. Brian Gordon, piccolo player and assistant principal flutist with the Phoenix Symphony Orchestra, performs a free piccolo recital at 7:30 p.m. Friday, January 12, at Rincon Congregational Church, 122 N. Craycroft Road. Program features the music of Bach, Thea Musgrave and John La Montaine. Call Sandra Schwoebel, Tucson Flute Club President, at 321-4943 for information.

PROSCENIUM THEATRE. PCC West Campus. 2202 W. Anklam Road. 884-6458. The UA Balalaika Orchestra and Kalinka Russian Dance Ensemble perform a winter concert at 8 p.m. Saturday, January 13, and 3 p.m. Sunday, January 14. Tucson's male chorus, Sons of Orpheus, Kiev native Irina Orlova and a Balalaika quartet from Los Angeles join this group of over 50 dancers and musicians. Tickets are $7, $5 for students, and are available at Jeff's Classical Records, Piney Hollow, Guitar's Etc., the PCC box office and at the door. Call 884-6458 for information.

SOUTHWEST CENTER FOR MUSIC. 2175 N. Sixth Ave. 884-1220. The Southwest School of Music and Dance offers a performance potpourri in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at 7:30 p.m. Monday, January 15. The performance features chamber music by violist Karen Goulding, guest artists Brenda Buckendahl, Zoran Stilin and Paula Karrer, African dance by Denise Hwathorne-Bey, Karen Goulding and Jim Karrer, World Beat music with percussionists Brian Harris and Art Rodriquez and the Southwest School's Neighborhood Chorus. Tickets are $6, $3 for children and are available at the door. Proceeds benefit the school.

LUNCHTIME CONCERTS. Free concerts are offered from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at La Placita Village, 110 S. Church Ave., in the gazebo area. Interested musicians can call 623-2748 for information.

BROWN BAG CONCERTS. Tucson Scottish Rite continues its winter organ concert series with a performance from 12:15 to 12:45 p.m. Wednesday, January 17, at the Scottish Rite Cathedral, 160 S. Scott Ave. The Molly's perform from noon to 1 p.m. at Dinnerware Gallery, 135 E. Congress.

Out Of Town

ATC BENEFIT. Davis Gaines, Broadway's Phantom of the Opera, takes off his mask for a concert to benefit the Arizona Theatre Company on Tuesday, January 16, at Herberger Theatre, 222 E. Monroe, Phoenix. Gaines' An Intimate Evening of Song: From Broadway and Beyond is part of ATC's annual fundraising gala, Cabaret Ninety-Six. Event begins with cocktails at 6:30 p.m., followed by Gaines' performance at 8 p.m. Tickets range from $95 to $175 and are available through the ATC box office, the Herberger box office and all Dillard's tickets outlets. KLEZMER LECTURE. The Klezmer Conservatory Band conducts a lecture/demonstration from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, January 17, at the Jewish Community Center, located at River Road and Dodge Boulevard. The band's musical director, Hankus Netsky, will discuss Klezmer Music, Then and Now, which introduces the audience to the Yiddish language and explores the varied cultural sources that form the basis of Klezmer. FREE FLUTE INSTRUCTION. The Tucson Flute Club offers free workshops for high school flute players intending to audition for Regional Band. The first workshop meets from 9:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, January 13, at Flowing Wells H.S., 3725 N. Flowing Wells Road. Pat Watrous, flutist with the Tucson Symphony Orchestra, will cover scales, sight-reading, piccolo, required orchestral excerpts and tips on how to prepare for an audition. AUDITION NOTICE. The Arizona Repertory Singers, an a cappella adult choir, hosts auditions for tenors, baritones and basses Tuesday evenings throughout January. SINGERS NEEDED. The UA Community Chorus is looking for singers for the spring 1996 portion of its concert season. Tenors and basses are especially needed. Rehearsals are from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesdays, beginning January 16, in the UA Music Building, room 146. No audition necessary, but a $10 fee is required at the first rehearsal.
