There was an Internet phenomenon several years back featuring outtakes of a sales video; about 15 years before that, the same video was passed around on VHS, making its way all over the country. It featured a Winnebago salesman listing the virtues of his product—and when he screwed up, the profanities flew. Ben Steinbauer had an idea: He’d find the man in the video, Jack Rebney. Winnebago Man could be a travelogue, but instead, Steinbauer finds his subject early and really gets to know him. Is Rebney the same profane pitchman seen in the outtakes? We might be better off not knowing; Winnebago Man is one of the few documentaries where less information might have provided a better, more-fulfilling story.
