Toolman - I am from New York, where gun laws are very strict. The fact of the matter is, in states where there is little or no waiting period for purchasing a gun, much less ANY sort of a background check, guns are going to be available to these people. Expecting a gun shop owner to be able to recognize a "tick" in someones personality is unrealistic. Many of them have trouble counting their balls and coming up with the same number more than once.
Gun control - If you outlaw guns, then only outlaws will have guns. Guns don't kill people, people kill people. Does anyone think that people committing crimes are doing so with legally registered guns ? They are criminals, therefore they don't care !
