The first Purge -- if you can remember all the way back to 13 months ago -- presented a pretty cool filmmaking challenge. On the one night a year that America looks the other way on all crimes, a family is trapped in their home fighting for survival. It was claustrophobic and intense. Stupid, yes, but an effective, bloody thriller. The sequel, The Purge: Anarchy, takes its show on the road, with gangs of purgers hunting down victims to ostensibly keep crime rates low the rest of the year. It’s utter mayhem, obviously, but not without some cathartic merit, although this is purely low-rent stuff compared to the first flick. We probably have too many characters to deal with and too much story, as well, if you can believe it.There’s a third film brewing in this storyline, too, so brace yourself for next summer’s herd-thinning.
