The Green Thing

The Green Thing I picked up a newish local monthly newspaper while I was out shopping the other night, and I was surprised to see the paper bragging that it was the only "major" Tucson publication printed on 100 percent recycled newsprint.

I was surprised, because the Weekly has been printed on 100 percent recycled newsprint for years.

Therefore, I called the publisher of the publication and let her know about the mistake; she was very polite and apologized, promising a correction. She said she made an assumption because we don't tout the fact that the Weekly is printed on recycled paper.

I told her I didn't think we necessarily needed to publicize this; we're printed on 100 percent recycled newsprint not for publicity, but because it's the right thing to do.

However, she mentioned that our readers would probably like to know--and she's right. Therefore, we now mention that we're printed on 100 percent recycled newsprint in our staff box on Page 9.

The timing of all this is particularly apt, given that this week marks the 10th anniversary of the Kyoto Protocol--which, as you probably know by now, is the subject of our cover package this week. Thanks to the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies and my friends/former colleagues at the Sacramento News & Review for heading up this package. Check it out on Pages 20-29.

· On an unrelated note, I'd like to congratulate the Misfits, described by Misfits member Justin Lillie as the "Fourth Avenue superstar softball squad," on their stunning 18-15 victory over the Tucson Weekly softball team. We'll get even in the rematch!
