Upon turning 65, journalist Jep Gambardella (Toni Servillo) gets a big surprise about a past girlfriend, and his outlook on life broadens a bit. I know I just made the movie sound a little boring. Trust me, it isn’t. Beauty won a Golden Globe and an Oscar for Best Foreign Language film. Paolo Sorrentino directs this visually arresting film with supreme ingenuity, making nearly every moment a visual wonder to behold. From party dance trains, to somber funerals, the movie presents much in its more than two-hour running time. Servillo is terrific in the central role, a generally good man who will verbally cut you down at a party if you ask for it, or cry at a funeral even though he considers such an act “immoral.” This is a sweeping, lavish cinematic achievement that’ll make you think.
