JUDY BERLIN. This 96-minute black-and-white feature, written and directed by New York up-and-comer Eric Mendelsohn, has won accolades on the festival circuit and praise from critics from The New Yorker, Film Comment, The New York Post, Newsday and The L.A. Times. His directing, which has received comparison to that of Robert Altman and Errol Morris, won top honors at Sundance this year. Judy Berlin is the story of an idealistic, aspiring actress at odds with the ordinary characters of her small suburban community. It's a controlled study in understatement, which The New York Times poetically describes as "a fusion of science fiction and Chekhovian melancholy."

This Arizona premiere is the first of six award-winning independent films screening as part of the national Shooting Gallery Film Series. By a stroke of luck, Tucson is the only city in Arizona where you can participate in the Shooting Gallery Film Club, which includes admission to advance screenings and informal post-screening discussions with industry experts and guest critics. Individual tickets can be purchased for $18 at the door, or for the whole series ($90).
