According to a University of Arizona Police Department report, officers declined to arrest two students after they allegedly admitted setting cotton balls--soaked in nail-polish remover--on fire before throwing in the direction of a dormmate's car.
The student who owned the car told police he looked out his dorm window and saw a small fire coming from the exterior of his car. He also saw two dormmates pour water from their open window onto the vehicle below, in an attempt to put out the flames.
The two dormmates told police they had soaked cotton balls in nail polish remover and set them on fire before trying to play catch with them. They soon realized the cotton balls were too hot to play with, and threw them out the window, accidentally striking the car, they told police.
On the condition that they pay for the repairs, the car owner declined to prosecute.
Officers took photos of the burn marks.
'Home Alone 4: Unsupervised in South Tucson'
South Jerome Avenue and West Floyd Street, March 7, 6 P.M.
Child Protective Services will investigate a Tucson family after a 2-year old and her 4-year-old brother were found wandering the streets unsupervised, a Pima County Sheriff's Department report stated.
Neighbors called deputies after seeing the children without supervision and noticing that the 2-year-old had a deep cut on her leg. Some of the neighbors told police that they have seen the children wandering around the neighborhood alone in the past.
The 2-year-old was taken to a nearby hospital, where her leg was stitched.
Deputies ran a background check on the mother while speaking with her. She was arrested for having misdemeanor warrants.
The 4-year-old told police that earlier in the day, his father pushed his mother inside the house. His mother fell and broke some glass, which the 2-year-old later cut herself on, the report stated.
Deputies waited with the children until representatives from CPS arrived.
The case was forwarded to a PCSD sergeant who deals with child neglect cases.
Candy Caper
South Cardinal Avenue and West Valencia Road, March 1, 5:45 P.M.
According to a PCSD report, deputies arrested two children after they allegedly stole $18 worth of bulk candy from a Tucson grocery store.
An employee at Safeway Food and Drug Store, 2940 W. Valencia Road, told deputies that he saw the two boys put large amounts of candy into a plastic bag before walking out the door.
The boys admitted to trying to steal the candy, the report stated.
The boys were taken to one of their mothers' homes. Deputies explained to her why the boys were arrested for suspicion of shoplifting before releasing them.
