HUB Restaurant and Creamery
Couple Kade Mislinski and Jenny Rice are opening a new restaurant called HUB Restaurant and Creamery at 266 E. Congress St. “It’s meat, ice cream and beer. Just American classic,” said Mislinski, who expects to open the doors early next year. Expect rotisserie meats, antipasto plates, 24 beers on tap, dozens of wines by the glass and nightly DJs. Takamatsu Update
Repairs to Takamatsu at 5532 E. Speedway Blvd. continue, despite thieves who keep breaking in and stealing equipment, piping and electrical wiring. Peter Koga, whose family owns and operates several Takamatsu locations around the state, said he expects to reopen the Tucson location in March. It closed in June after a fire caused massive damage.
Drink Wine for Hunger
Dozens of restaurants are donating a portion of the profits from sales of E&J Gallo Winery’s William Hill, Louis M. Martini, Ecco Domani, Alamos, Mirassou and MacMurray wines to the Tucson Community Food Bank through Friday, Dec. 31. Tamale Time
With the holiday season upon us, appetites turn to tamales. Sample some of the finest at these upcoming events:
Vendors selling tamales and competing in traditional, green-corn and gourmet categories highlight the sixth annual Tamal and Heritage Festival from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 4, at Casino del Sol’s Anselmo Valencia Tori Amphitheater, 5655 W. Valencia Road. More than 100 vendors had signed up when we spoke to event organizers, and dozens more were expected. Admission is free; www.solcasinos.com.
Learn tamale-making basics at a demonstration from 11 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Dec. 4, at the Joel D. Valdez Main Library, 101 N. Stone Ave. The event also features a reading by children’s author Gina Macaluso, who will read from Green Corn Tamales. Tickets will be handed out 30 minutes prior to the event, and only 100 people will be admitted; 791-4010.
Lastly, City Councilwoman Regina Romero holds her second annual tamale contest from 5:30 to 8 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 9, at Mercado San Agustin at 100 S. Avenida del Convento. Judges from Tooley’s Café and Casa Vicente will pick the winners in meat, sweet and unique categories, and admission is free; 791-4040.
