'Bizarre Foods With Andrew Zimmern': Tucson Edition

Several Tucson restaurants will be featured in the episode of Bizarre Foods With Andrew Zimmern airing on Monday, May 17. We've gotten word that Zimmern tried carne seca at El Charro Café (311 N. Court Ave.), birria at Maico (835 E. 22nd St.) and pumpkin empanadas, tacos de cabeza and flan at Taqueria Pico de Gallo (2618 S. Sixth Ave.). The Travel Channel taped the scenes last November.

Primavera Cooks!

The Primavera Foundation kicks off its annual Primavera Cooks dining series with a dinner at the J-BAR on Wednesday, May 19. The series features 10 wine-paired gourmet dinners at locally owned restaurants through Sunday, Sept. 19, with a portion of the proceeds going toward Primavera Foundation's ongoing fight against homelessness and poverty. A spokesman said most of the apprentice positions—opportunities to work with top chefs and sommeliers for $250—are already filled, but reservations for next year's events are being taken. The dinners are $125 each. Call 623-5111, ext. 101, or e-mail delliott@primavera.org for reservations. Visit www.primavera.org for more information.
