'Man V. Food,' Meet Lindy's on Fourth
The Travel Channel's popular show Man V. Food is slated to film an episode at Lindy's on Fourth (431 N. Fourth Ave.; 207-6970) on Friday, Sept. 25. The show's star, Adam Richman, will try to finish the eatery's infamous O.M.F.G. burger—a gut-busting behemoth boasting 12 patties and 12 slices of cheese—in less than 20 minutes. Lindy's is to be congratulated for making this notable mark on the national food map. The episode is scheduled to air Wednesday, Dec. 2.
El Coqui
Understanding Puerto Rican cuisine requires a brief review of the island's history: Indigenous inhabitants subsisted on corn, seafood and tropical fruit, until the Spaniards showed up with beef, pork, Spanish spices ... and African slaves, who added root crops, okra and fried foods into the mix. Americans and Europeans added pasta, bacon and other items. These ingredients all find a place in modern-day Puerto Rican cuisine, which is on its way to the Old Pueblo in the form of El Coqui, a restaurant under construction on the corner of 22nd Street and Craycroft Road. No word yet on when it'll open; we'll keep you posted.
Greek Festival
The Greek Festival is a wonderful thing to eat your way across. Start off with gyros drizzled with tzatziki sauce before working your way to the bottom of a plate of baklava, koulourakia cookies and other delights. Top it off with a Greek beer or a glass of ouzo, and you'll be feeling finer than the white sands of a Zakynthos beach. The event will be held at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church (1145 E. Fort Lowell Road; 888-0505) from Thursday, Sept. 24, through Sunday, Sept. 27. Admission is $3 per day; various discounts are available. Call or visit www.stdemtucson.org for more information.
Cupcakes
Cupcakes, a Scottsdale shop that specializes in, yep, cupcakes, is opening a store in Tucson, according to the store's Web site, www.gotcupcakes.com. A look at the menu showed all sorts of interesting creations, such as peanut-butter-and-jelly and mimosa cupcakes, and a dog-friendly sweet called the "pee wee." The store is set to open in the Crossroads Festival Shopping Center (4811 E. Grant Road) sometime next month.
