Year of the Tiger

Tiger, the daytime bartender at the Tap Room at Hotel Congress (and an all-around nice guy), celebrated 50 years of working at the downtown mainstay with a celebration last Thursday. To say Tiger is adored and respected by his patrons is the understatement of the, well, half-century, and the hotel is marking his anniversary by taking 50 cents off of any draft beer ordered during his shift through the end of the year. You're the man, Tiger. Hotel Congress is located at 311 E. Congress St.; 622-8848.

Pick Your Price

The Canyon Café at Loews Ventana Canyon Resort (7000 N. Resort Drive) will remove the prices from a number of lunch-menu items and offer the selections for whatever diners are willing to pay from Monday, June 15, through Monday, Sept. 7. Sounds crazy, right? Well, what's even nuttier is the fact that the items include beef tenderloin, oven-seared half-chicken and other items that typically fetch top-dollar. Lunch hours are 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Call 299-2020 for more information.

Eat Yourself Thin

Now that the New Year's resolutions have melted away, but the pounds haven't, how about another try? Join master personal trainer Ron Holland and chef Dina Delaney for their "kitchen intervention" class from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, June 6. The class—which takes place at Gold's Gym at 7315 N. Oracle Road—focuses on shopping and cooking in ways that limit fat and calories. It costs $85, which includes a catered lunch. Call 579-6791, or visit www.swatfitness.com/intervention.html for more info.

Gavi at Foothills Mall Closes

Gavi Colaleo, owner of the various Gavi restaurants, has closed the Foothills Mall location (7401 N. La Cholla Blvd.). Gavi restaurants are a perennial winner of this paper's Best of Tucson™ award for Italian food. The search is on for another northwest location, according to an e-mail from Colaleo's wife, Natalie Scott, but there's no word on where or when it could open.

Summer Specials

The numerous restaurants that make up Tucson Originals, an alliance of independent and locally owned restaurants, are offering a variety of specials for $20.09 through Monday, Sept. 7. You'll find great deals on everything from dessert samplers to lobster dinners at eateries all over town. See the full list at www.tucsonoriginals.com.
