Mesquite Munchies
On Saturday, Nov. 8, the Desert Harvesters will present a mesquite pancake breakfast and milling event. Pancakes cost $1 each. Try locally made teas, organic coffee, backyard honey and prickly-pear syrup. Bring your mesquite pods for grinding into flour for a small additional cost. Listen to live music, enjoy camaraderie and purchase native foods at Dunbar/Spring Organic Community Garden, located at 11th Avenue and University Boulevard. Visit the Harvesters Web site for details; breakfast is served from 9 a.m. to noon, and milling takes place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Day Tripping: Wine Festival
Sonoita Vineyards celebrates the release of Mi Casa, the new house wine featuring a blend of merlot, cabernet sauvignon and syrah. Visit on Saturday, Nov. 8, for wine-tasting, a grape-to-glass wine tour, live music, picnicking and horseback rides from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The cost is $10, and for an additional $10, attendees can receive a food pairing, at 290 Elgin-Canelo Road, 3 miles south of Elgin; (520) 455-5893; Vineyards Web site.
Jewish Food Festival
You don't have to be Jewish to enjoy the Jewish Cook-Off and Food Festival, to be held Sunday, Nov. 9, at Brandi Fenton Memorial Park, 3482 E. River Road. From noon to 5 p.m., take pleasure in a musical menu of steel drums, Israeli dancing and local rock bands. Some of Tucson's top restaurants and chefs will be cooking food for purchase. Participants include Sabra, L'Chaim Catering, Hacienda del Sol, Pastiche, Elle, Motzi, Shlomo and Vito's, Zona 78, Jonathan's Cork, Ristorante Italia, Kingfisher/Bluefin, Westward Look Resort and Alan Zeman. The entrance fee is $2 per adult, and free for children younger than 12. Half of the gate admissions will be donated directly to the Community Food Bank. Frost Celebrates
Last week, Frost, a Gelato Shoppe, celebrated the first anniversary of its second location at 7301 E. Tanque Verde Road, across from Udall Park. The original location is at 7131 N. Oracle Road. Frost plans to open a third location at La Encantada, next to Bluepoint Kitchen and Bar, around Thanksgiving.
