Stamp Out Hunger
On Saturday, May 12, the U.S. Post Office teams up with Community Food Bank. Letter carriers will pick up cans of food to help tide over young working families through the long summer months. Last year, 266,000 pounds of food were collected.
Mother's Day Dining
According to Zagat, more people eat out on Mother's Day than any other holiday, even Valentine's Day. Tucsonans have numerous choices, as practically every restaurant will be open all day, including some restaurants that are usually closed on Sunday, like Cuvée World Bistro. Options include hotels, many Tucson Originals restaurants, the resorts and the chain gangs. For moms of the vegetarian/vegan persuasion, Govinda's Natural Foods Buffet offers brunch along with live music, flowers and a vegetarian cookbook for the first 50 mothers. Consider a stroll through Tucson Botanical Gardens to enjoy the orchids and bonsai, then treat her to a Mediterranean-inspired buffet brunch by Café 54 at the Gardens' Café from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Please RSVP at 326-9686. The one-trip buffet costs $15 per person, payable on Sunday, May 13.
Food Gifts for Mom (or You)
· If mom is a chocoholic who leans toward exotica, get her Vosges haute chocolate bars from Feast (4122 E. Speedway Blvd., 326-9363). Individual bars are a mix of dark and milk chocolate spiked with unusual ingredients--chipotle, cinnamon, hemp, wasabi, ginger and curry.· Numi Flowering Tea is a rosette of hand-sewn tea leaves and flowers that blossom into exotic shapes when steeped in hot water. Primavera Cooks
On Wednesday, May 16, Primavera Cooks begins at Janos Restaurant. It spreads to Dakota Café on May 30, Feast on June 11 and Acacia on June 27. Gourmet meals are prepared by the restaurant's chefs along with local foodies aching to don a toque. Diners pay $125 for a multicourse meal paired with wines. A portion of the dinners is tax-deductible and directly benefits Primavera's programs and services by helping the very low-income, homeless and at-risk populations obtain self-sufficiency and find dignity in their lives.
