Restaurant of the Month

VegCooking.com, a PETA Web site, chose Lovin' Spoonfuls as restaurant of the month. According to Reannon Peterson, manager of vegan campaigns, "Lovin' Spoonfuls serves delicious, cruelty-free food that delights vegetarians and meat-eaters alike with comfort food like a Route 66 bacon cheeseburger and stroganoff supreme to curried mushroom-walnut pâté and the very popular Adzuki bean burger. It's the perfect example of blending culinary creativity with compassion for animals." The restaurant is located at 2990 N. Campbell Ave.; 325-7766.

Best Corned Beef in America

The Rosengarten Report, a nationally distributed newsletter covering undiscovered food products, restaurants, wines and travel destinations, named Tucson's Feig's Kosher Foods Market and Deli as having the best corned beef in America. David Rosengarten writes in the March issue, "To say I'm overwhelmed by the fact that corned beef from Tucson, Arizona, emerged as the No. 1 product in this large, star-studded field of pickled entrants would be a vast understatement. I am positively plotzing." In 2003, the Report was recognized with a James Beard Award. Feig's is located at 5071 E. Fifth St.; 325-2255.

Speaking of Delis

If you happen to be in Los Angeles on Monday, March 20, Canter's Deli will be celebrating its 75th anniversary by offering a corned beef sandwich on rye with potato salad, pickle and a piece of chocolate rugula, for 75 cents from noon to midnight, at 419 N. Fairfax Ave. Such a deal!

Pinot Envy

The movie Sideways propelled pinot noir from wine-geek obscurity to mainstream marketing. Does the chameleon-like grape live up to the hype? You be the judge at the Beverage House during a tasting of wines from California, Oregon and perhaps France, on March 22, from 6 to 8 p.m., at 6250 N. Oracle Road; 219-6424. The cost is a mere $4 per person. Wines tasted during the event may be purchased at a 20 percent discount.
