Philanthropy With Phlavor

Every June and October, Pastiche Modern Eatery offers diners an opportunity to donate 5 percent of the check to their favorite registered 501(c)3 charity. To date, they have donated more than $45,000. Any charity that earns more than $10 has the option of taking the 5 percent in cash or doubling that amount in donated gift certificates for silent auctions and giveaways. For the past two years, Pastiche has received the Arizona Restaurant and Hospitality Association's "Good Neighbor Award" for their commitment to Philanthropy With Phlavor. Support a local restaurant and your favorite charity at 3025 N. Campbell Ave, 325-3333.

Chefs Dance Around St. Philip's Plaza

Pay attention: Executive Chef Albert Hall tap danced from Hacienda Del Sol to Miguel's and then to his soon-to-open Acacia's at St Philip's. Meanwhile, John Mertes, formerly of Ovens, departed to Miguel's on Oracle Road. (To further stir the pot, Mertes was the sous chef at Hacienda Del Sol under Albert Hall.) Jeff Fuld, formerly of Daniel's but soon to be Parallel 32 (formerly Ovens), will open as the new executive chef. And at Vivace's, according to Daniel Scordato, business is good, as usual.

Take the Trinchero Family Estates tongue fu tasting challenge on Saturday, Nov. 6, at Westward Look Resort. Learn what flat, thin, flabby and hot means, wine-wise. Tickets cost $40; buy online at www.tucsonculinaryfestival.com.

R.I.P

Russell Guy Freedlander, aka, Rusty, owner of Rusty's Sports Grille and Putney's, passed away unexpectedly on Sept. 21 at 53 years young. The former teacher and counselor-turned-restaurateur had a zest for people and hospitality. Donations may be made to his alma mater, the New York Military Academy. Call 623-3333 for specifics.
