Sugar Cubz

We have to hand it to a bunch of entrepreneurial kids, dubbed the Sugar Cubz, who live in the Greenview Apartments near the El Rio Neighborhood Center. For the past few years, they've been selling packaged snacks and sodas to neighborhood kids, primarily as a fund-raiser, but also to gain experience in retail sales, budgeting and managing inventory. Their initiative doesn't stop there; they will be selling goodies at the Second Annual PRO Neighborhoods' Fiesta de los Barrios on Saturday, May 8, from 6-10 p.m. at the southwest corner of Kino Parkway and Silverlake Road. Other food vendors, a farmers' market and entertainment will be on hand, too. Call 882-5883 for more information.

Happy Mother's Day

Hug your mom and treat her right today and every day. Practically every restaurant in town has some sort of Mother's Day meal--here are a few of the more unusual offerings:

Vegetarian moms will appreciate the buffet brunch at Govinda's, 711 E. Blacklidge Drive, from 11 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Savor a vegetable medley with rice, spinach fritters with mint chutney, scrambled tofu, pumpkin soup, fruit salad, strawberry shortcake and more. All moms receive a complimentary vegetarian cookbook; call 792-0630 for details.

If Mom has a green thumb, and a stroll through the Tucson Botanical Garden would suit her fancy, consider the Mother's Day brunch, prepared by Doug Levy from the Feast and served under fragrant citrus trees in the picnic area from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Cost is $30 per person, which includes admission. Reservations are required; call 326-9686, ext. 10.

For a peak experience--depending on the temperature, elevation and mom's physical endurance--take a hike with a lovely picnic basket filled with a gourmet lunch. Stop by her favorite specialty store, like Roma's Italian Imports or AJ's Fine Foods, to pick up all the fixings.
