Noshing Around

Krispy Kreme Is Back

Dan Brinton, aka "Doughnut Dan," has opened a third Southern Arizona Krispy Kreme location at 5775 E. Broadway Blvd., near Park Place Mall. The store doesn't have a walk-in area, so doughnuts and coffee—including some affordable specialty-coffee drinks—are sold via a walk-up window and a drive-through.

Austin's Apparently Closed

Austin's Old Fashioned Ice Cream, a local restaurant that opened way back in 1959, has apparently gone out of business. Calls to the restaurant have gone unanswered for weeks, and when we recently made a visit to its location at 6129 E. Broadway Blvd., we found a sign taped to the window by the landlord saying that the locks had been changed because the rent hadn't been paid. The eatery was originally located at 2920 E. Broadway Blvd., moving several years ago to its new location. Attempts to reach the owners were unsuccessful.

A Steak in the Neighborhood

Luke Cusack, the man behind the upscale Pearl and Zen Rock nightclubs, has opened a new restaurant called A Steak in the Neighborhood at 135 E. Congress St. Expect choice and prime cuts of meat prepared as steaks, stroganoff, beef and broccoli, burgers and cheesesteaks, with a handful of non-beef items like chicken marsala and breakfast burritos. Hours are 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday; 11 a.m. to 3 a.m., Friday; and 5 p.m. to 3 a.m., Saturday.

Cusack's other venture, Sapphire Lounge, has opened in the former Heart-Five location at 61 E. Congress St. It features dueling pianos downstairs, Las Vegas-style music and dancing upstairs, and an outside "sky deck" area.

River Road Gardens

River Road Gardens, the organic farm at the Tucson Waldorf School's River Bend Campus (3605 E. River Road), had one heck of a first year. About 10,000 pounds of produce were harvested in 12,000 square feet, and Feast, Hacienda del Sol, Zona 78 and Harvest Restaurant started using their vegetables. Co-owner Jon McNamara says the farm serves as a classroom for Waldorf students, and that the vegetables are available for purchase at the farm from 8 a.m. to noon, every Saturday. The farm is currently seeking volunteers, and McNamara says the help rarely leaves empty-handed; 529-1032.
