Noshing Around

Ode to Olive Oil

The fragrance, color and taste of olive oil vary by growing region and crop condition. At Zona 78, the home of stone-fired foods, join owners Rick Fink and Tom Firth and Chef Doug McElfish for an olive oil tasting from Italy, Greece and Spain, paired with food and wine. It all happens from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Saturday, July 25, at 78 W. River Road for $15. Call 888-7878 to RSVP.

Kale, Kale, the Gang's All Here

Imagine a box of the freshest organic fruits and vegetables delivered to your door weekly or biweekly. Kathryn Hawkes, owner of Matt's Organics, recommends broadening your flavor horizons. Boxes are filled with one-third each of fruits, cooking vegetables and salad stuff. Dislike certain veggies? No problem; your preferences are honored. A recipe is provided along with fresh herbs, onions and potatoes. Order online at mattsorganics.com or call 790-4360.

Eat to Win at Bistro Zin

Every time you eat at Bistro Zin--beginning Thursday, July 15--you could win one of three prizes to celebrate their fourth anniversary: a trip for two to Napa Valley, a private dinner for 10 prepared by Chef Clint Woods at the restaurant or in your home, or a private wine seminar for 10 friends with sommelier Regan Jasper, at 1865 E. River Road, 299-7799. Winners will be announced Sept. 15.

Cherries Jubilee

Here's a dessert not found very often, in which dark cherries are combined with brandy, flambéed (don't try this at home) and served over vanilla ice cream. Try the elegant four-course special summer menu at Anthony's in the Catalinas for $69.95 for two, which includes a half bottle of wine. Anthony's (6440 N. Campbell Avenue, 299-1771) is open Monday through Saturday from 5:30-10:30 p.m., but the special is not available on Friday and Saturday.
