Nine Questions

Musician, recording engineer and producer Nathan Sabatino owns and operates Loveland Studio, which has turned out recordings from dozens of local and national artists, including Dr. Dog, Howe Gelb, Neko Case, Lonna Kelley, the Sand Rubies and Bob Log III. He is a current member of both Loveland and Golden Boots, the latter of which will perform at Club Congress on Wednesday, Jan. 30.

What was the first concert you ever saw?

I guess technically it was Tiny Tim playing at the circus in about 1984. I remember being really scared, because I thought somehow they had extracted the character from A Christmas Carol, and he was going to limp out there and sing. I was 8 years old and terrified. The first real concert I saw was Fugazi at the Philadelphia YMCA in '88 or '89.

What CDs are in your changer right now?

Willoughby, I Know What You're Up To; Howlin' Wolf, The Chess Box, Madeleine Peyroux, Careless Love; a compilation of Ray Charles' Atlantic singles; The Holy Rolling Empire; Destroyer, Thief. Mostly, I listen to talk radio, though.

How many total albums do you own (CDs, vinyl, cassettes, 8-tracks)?

About 500 albums on CD, vinyl and iTunes. I'm also getting about 2,000 records as a dowry next month.

Do you download music, and if so, legally or illegally?

Legally. I'm trying to get rid of all my CDs and just have things on iTunes--if it's not on vinyl, I don't see a point in keeping a physical copy.

What was the first album you owned?

Dead Kennedys, Plastic Surgery Disasters/In God We Trust, Inc. on cassette.

What song would you like to have played at your funeral?

I want Symmetry to play at my funeral; just their regular set would be fine (symmetrylv.com).

Musically speaking, what do you love that your friends don't know about? What's your favorite guilty pleasure?

Listening to KTUC AM 1400. And Justin Timberlake.

What band or artist changed your life, and how?

I'll get back to you on that one.

Figurative gun to your head, what is your favorite album of all time?

The Clash, Sandinista!
