What was the first concert you ever saw?
Woodstock. My parents took me when I was a baby.
What CDs are in your changer right now?
This is embarrassing: It's just the record that I just made. ... I would never listen to my own music, but I'm still mixing, and so, while we were on the road, I would get a FedEx each day of a new mix, and so that's the only thing I've been listening to.
How many total albums do you own (CDs, vinyl, cassettes, 8-tracks)?
I owned thousands, but our house flooded ... and we lost everything. I own a handful now, whatever we had left in the car--some Vic Chesnutt, some Howe Gelb, and that's about it. We have to start over.
Do you download music, and if so, legally or illegally?
I personally don't, because I hate music, but I'm very pro-downloading, any kind of music sharing.
What was the first album you owned?
My dad had a pretty cool record collection. He listened to the Clash and the Talking Heads, Patti Smith, Velvet Underground, but when it came time to start buying my own records... an X record was probably the first one I bought.
What song would you like to have played at your funeral?
I did a cover of "Amazing Grace" that had one of my best friends playing this five-minute-long slide guitar solo at the end, so maybe I would do that.
Musically speaking, what do you love that your friends don't know about? What's your favorite guilty pleasure?
I wish I had guilty pleasures. I have such high standards of music that if anybody's lying, I can't listen to it. Lying with sound is just the worst crime to me.
What band or artist changed your life, and how?
Vic Chesnutt. ... He plays acoustic guitar as if it's bass, rhythm and lead, and it was his medium ... he painted with it. I got it when I was on tour with him, and he made my next record, as far as I'm concerned, the major turning point as far as being a solo artist.
Figurative gun to your head, what is your favorite album of all time?
The Violent Femmes' first record.
