Nine Questions

When he's not slinging drinks at Che's Lounge, Donovan White is often holed up in his Solar Culture art studio, applying his cartoonish renderings of shady ne'er-do-wells to just about every surface imaginable, from stickers and lightboxes to skateboards and, um, paper. His latest show, his third at Hotel Congress, opens with a reception at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 5, and will feature paintings of working-class heroes, as well as a performance by Thunderwear.

What was the first concert you ever saw?

My mom took me to Ernest Tubb, but the first out-of-pocket was Heart in sixth grade.

Some Weird War, Yardbirds, Mastodon, Thunderwear.

How many total albums do you own (CDs, vinyl, cassettes, 8-tracks)?

About 800 CDs and about 40 records.

Do you download music, and if so, legally or illegally?

Mostly legally, but I've got a friend who can get me the goods if I hanker.

What was the first album you owned?

I don't know who wrote it, but it was Pac-Man Fever and I loved it so ... (Editor's note: It was by Buckner and Garcia.)

"Angel of Death"--by Slayer, of course--a real crowd-pleaser.

Musically speaking, what do you love that your friends don't know about? What's your favorite guilty pleasure?

Bad Brains. They had it all. Good skateboarding music.

Figurative gun to your head, what is your favorite album of all time?

Bad Brains' I Against I.
