Jason McHenry

Nine Questions

At night, Jason McHenry is the executive doorman at Plush. By day, he is a manager at Shot in the Dark Cafe in downtown Tucson. He is also an accomplished artist whose works have been collected by the likes of R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck, and may be viewed at smartwentcrazy.com. He is originally from Missouri and enjoys hanging out with his wife, Kat.

What is the first concert you ever saw?

Probably either Kiss or Black Flag. I'm guessing it was Black Flag, though. I was maybe 14 or so. Gang Green played with them, too.

What CDs are in your changer right now?

Pandora's Lunchbox's Swooooooon, a couple of Elvis Costello albums and a good handful of Okkervil River and Eels are in pretty recent rotation.

How many total albums do you own (CDs, vinyl, cassettes, 8-tracks)?

Hardly any. I gave most of them away to my niece for her ninth birthday, last month.

Do you download music, and if so, legally or illegally?

Yup. I guess it might be considered illegal, but most of it is stuff that I've already bought and paid for in some fashion, but don't have a "real" copy of any longer.

What was the first album you owned?

Some U2 album for sure. I'm betting it was October. Although I wouldn't rule out Thriller as some close contender.

What song would you like to have played at your funeral?

Disintegration by The Cure. In its entirety.

Musically speaking, what do you love that your friends don't know about? What's your favorite guilty pleasure?

Nobody I know seems to like Tears for Fears as much as I do. And Jay-Z's "Takeover" is something that I seem to listen to a lot without ever really admitting to it.

What band or artist changed your life, and how?

I'd have no idea how to really answer this one. ... Peter Gabriel's "Biko" was a song I remember really having an effect on me. I think it was on some benefit compilation. R.E.M. has always played some role in my life.

Figurative gun to your head, what is your favorite album of all time?

Disintegration or U2's The Unforgettable Fire.
