On Saturday, June 22, the Rialto Theatre will host a "Tucson's Best" showcase featuring local hardcore bands. Jared Juan is the only remaining founding member of Light Her Up, a local metalcore that will perform at the event. Due to some recent changes within the band, the Rialto show will be the first time some of the new members perform with the band onstage. What was the first concert you attended?
I don't remember the year but it was a band called Kittie, this all-female band, at KFMA Day. It was awesome.
What are you listening to these days?
I listen to a pretty big range of music. Lately I've been listening to a lot of Jason Mraz, Upon a Burning Body and Memphis May Fire.
What was the first album you owned?
Toxicity by System of a Down. I recently started listening to it again on Spotify.
What artist, genre or musical trend does everyone seem to love, but you just don't get?
I don't get dubstep at all. I've tried a couple of times and I just can't get into it.
What musical act, current or defunct, would you most like to see perform live?
I'd really love to see someone alternative like Jason Mraz, Jack Johnson or Jonny Craig.
Musically speaking, what is your favorite guilty pleasure?
It's probably "Dreaming of You" by Selena. I love that song.
What song would you like to have played at your funeral?
I would love to have that song—I don't even know what it's called—'Give me the beat boys and free my soul, I want to get lost in your rock 'n' roll and drift away.' That one.
What band or artist changed your life, and how?
Hmm. I'd have to say Bullet for my Valentine. During my adolescence, I listened to them all the time. I had a cousin who committed suicide and that album helped my get through it. Their song All the Things I Hate really hit home.
Figurative gun to your head, what is your favorite album of all time?
And Justice for All by Metallica. One of the only albums I can listen all the way through without wanting to skip any of the songs.
