Nine Questions

Sammy Claiborn, 24, plays guitar for The Okmoniks, who--soon after they return from playing at several unofficial showcases at South by Southwest--plan to begin work on a new album. Claiborn also operates In-Fi Records, which has released three Okmoniks 7-inches. He would like to inform you that his band wants to play at your next party.

What was the first concert you ever saw?

I started going to rock 'n' roll shows at Tempe Bowl and Boston's in high school; my first was either Man or Astro-man? or Mr. T Experience.

What CDs are in your changer right now?

I don't have a CD changer, but I have a stack of records next to my turntable for rotation! Right now, this includes Rezillos, Kinks, Flakes, Slade, Swamp Rats, COIN.

How many total albums do you own (CDs, vinyl, caassettes, 8-tracks)?

About 800 LPs, 500 7"s, 200 Okmoniks 7"s that need sleeves, a smattering of CDs and 250 NES (Nintendo) games, with some of my all-time favorite tunes.

Do you download music, and if so, legally or illegally?

Yes, and once I download something, I will never buy it; I mean I already have it, right? For free? Hey, I don't get paid for my records!

What was the first album you owned?

I think it was an Another Bad Creation tape. It had a song about Spiderman on it called "Spydermann," but judging from the lyrics, I think it was about the real Spidey. It must have been a copyright thing.

What song would you like to have played at your funeral?

I would like to have a continuous loop of those tones teenagers can only hear playing--you know, the kind that scares them off?

Musically speaking, what do you love that your friends don't know about? What's your favorite guilty pleasure?

Late Ramones records. I can't get enough of that stuff! Pleasant Dreams, Too Tough to Die, Animal Boy, even End of the Century. The Okmoniks get subjected to Joey's "growling years" in the tour van. But not Acid Eaters; that album just sucks.

What band or artist changed your life, and how?

The Modern Lovers: the mix-tape equivalent of roofies.

Figurative gun to your head, what is your favorite album of all time?

I know I should name something timeless and profound like Fun House or Forever Changes, but really it's the first Supercharger record all the way.
